2006 Corolla S Engine Issues? Please help
Yesterday my wife and I were driving down the road in her Corolla, and the thing suddenly lost power and started sputtering and then died. Engine light came on. We tried starting it again and it ran fine for about a second and then sputtered and died again. I got out and looked under the hood, couldn't find anything wrong. We waited about 5 minutes, and started it again, and started just fine. I was able to do a u-turn and head in the direction of home, when about a minute of running, it sputtered, and died again. We pretty much did this whole routine to get back home about 2 miles away.
When it sputters, theres a clicking sound in the dash it sounds like, and the engine rpm drops low then goes high to about 1500rpm, then drops again and then eventually dies. When it starts this act, and loses power, pressing the gas pedal to the floor barely moves the car faster than 10 miles an hour.
I replaced the spark plugs last night, also changed the oil as well as that was just about due. Spark plugs didn't look too bad, but replaced them anyway. Some did have a rich fuel smell to them, but not sure if that was normal or not. I'm used to working on older cars, and was very amazed at the whole spark plug setup, how they're not the normal plug wires. I could not find an ignition coil or cap of any sort, and not sure if there's any even on there. I had it in my garage today and let the engine idle, and after about 5-6 minutes it started again. I couldn't see anything weird going on by looking, other than the engine reving and dying. One thing I did notice though was with the key still on after it died, there was a light humming/buzzing sound from somewhere around the throttle body, sounded like underneath somewhere. I did clean the throttle body with some cleaner, and same issues. I also pulled out the oxygen sensor and i'm not sure if it's bad or not, because it wasn't that dirty. I checked the fuses and could not find a bad one. I wasn't sure about the relays, and how to tell which one was which, so I haven't touched them. I also looked at the battery, put a light in the indicator and it was green, which should be no problems. I threw a slow charger on it to see if it would help and it didn't. I've also unhooked the battery for about 30 minutes to see if that might reset some kind of computer or electronic malfunction that may be happening, and did not help as well. I don't have a code reader, and since I can't really drive it, I can't take it to somewhere to get the codes read.
I've ran out of options now, and was wondering if anyone had similar issues and how they ended up fixing them, or if anyone had ideas on what to look at next. The car is my wifes, she has it on a 3yr lease, and has 43k miles or so on it. I just want to get it running and would like to try and fix it myself rather than paying someone else some crazy amount of money when the lease will be running out in a few months.
Thank you in advance for any help.
