Default '05 Rear brake Drum

Does anyone know how to remove the rear drums? They don't pull off after removing the wheel.

Sometimes drums can be a monster to take off.Take a hammer and tap all around the drum(don't be too shy about the taps) and get a large screwdriver or prybar and pry the drum from the axle.Make sure there are no cleats on the lugs securing the drums. With a little persuasion it may come off.I'm not sure how your drum is made(I don't have a Tundra)but if all fails then you can rent/buy a drum puller,if it works with your type of drum.Hope this helps !

Thanks for the response JR. This is for the wife's 05' Matrix

It's front wheel drive, and it looks like there is an individual bearing under the brake drum. It appears to be separate from the 5 lug plate for the studs, but the drum itself might have a slight interference fit- enough to require some puller fitting onto the drum using a slide hammer to pull it from the 5-lug flange. There are two holes in it, although they don't look threaded. I am hoping someone with a Matrix can post. If those holes are threaded, I will definitely set up th puller and give it a try.

Those two holes are for the drum removal. You really don't need a puller...unless yu do have one. These 2 holes ARE threaded. Just get the appropriate bolts(available from any good hardware dept.) approx. 2" long and thread into these holes simultaneaously . They will push out the drum. Since these holes get a little rusty...put a drop of oil or grease on the threads of both the Bolts and these Holes. They will "start out" and turn easier when using your Ratchet.

Also, yu really should use a "Star" adjuster Tool to reduce the slack on the old brake shoes. This will also help in releasing the drums. The access is behind the drum on the brake plate. Yu remove a rubber plug from an oval slot to access.

It appears yu have never done this work before. Get a book...a Chiltons or a Haynes manual is fine for this work. It is easy to do.
Just not for a first timer.
