Default 2009 Corolla 1.8L 2ZR-FE - Oil Filter Location

Does anyone know where the oil filter is located on the 2ZR-FE 1.8L engine on the new 2009 Corolla?

They use a cartridge style now, not conventional spin on, right?

Not to my knowledge, I got some filters when I got the car and they are the same spin on as before.

The 08 corolla is spin on, but i have been told the 09's are the cartridge style.
It's possible they give you filters for the 08 instead, especially since you're having a hard time finding it.

It is located in the same location as the 09 2.4 engine. It is a very small spin-on type seen from under the vehicle. It is tucked up under the Black plastic Intake Runners(on 1.8's) on the passenger side.

It is easy to get to, but yu will need a lift to get at it. Yu don't need to remove any splash shield.

Yu cannot see/grab or remove this filter from the top!!!

REPLACEMENT

CAUTION:
  • Prolonged and repeated contact with engine oil will cause removal of natural oils from the skin, leading to dryness, irritation and dermatitis. In addition, used engine oil contains potentially harmful contaminants which may cause skin cancer.
  • Precautions should be taken when replacing engine oil to minimize the risk of your skin making contact with used engine oil. Wear protective clothing and gloves. Wash your skin thoroughly with soap and water, or use a waterless hand cleaner to remove any used engine oil. Do not use gasoline, thinners or solvents.
  • For environmental protection, used oil and used oil filters must be disposed of at designated disposal sites.
1. DRAIN ENGINE OIL
(a) Remove the oil filler cap.
(b) Remove the oil drain plug and drain the oil into a container.
(c) Clean and install the oil drain plug with a new gasket.
Torque: 37 N·m (377 kgf·cm, 27 ft·lbf)
2. REMOVE OIL FILTER CAP ASSEMBLY

(a) Using SST, loosen the oil filter cap 4 revolutions, align the cap ribs vertically, and drain the remaining engine oil in the oil filter cap.
SST: 09228-06501
Set a container below the oil filter cap assembly before loosening the oil filter cap.

(b) Remove the oil filter cap assembly.

(c) Remove oil filter element and O-ring from the oil filter cap.
Be sure to remove the O-ring (for the cap) by hand, without using any tools, to prevent damage to the groove for the O-ring on the cap.

3. INSTALL OIL FILTER CAP ASSEMBLY
(a) Clean the oil filter cap threads and O-ring groove.
(b) Apply a small amount of engine oil to a new O-ring and install it to the oil filter cap.
(c) Set a new oil filter element in the oil filter cap.
(d) Remove any dirt or foreign matter from the installation surface and inside of the engine.

(e) Reapply a small amount of engine oil to the O-ring of the oil filter cap assembly. Align the cutout in the oil filter cap threads 90° to the grooves in the oil filter bracket and temporarily tighten the cap.
Make sure that the O-ring does not get caught between the parts.

(f) Using SST, tighten the oil filter cap assembly.
Torque: 25 N·m (255 kgf·cm, 18 ft·lbf)
SST: 09228-06501

NOTICE:
  • After tightening the oil filter cap assembly, check for gaps between the installation surfaces.
  • Do not remove the oil filter bracket clip when installing the oil filter cap assembly.
  • Do not cross thread the oil filter cap assembly.
4. ADD ENGINE OIL
(a) Add fresh engine oil and install the oil filler cap.

Thumbs up Re: 2009 Corolla 1.8L 2ZR-FE - Oil Filter Location

It is a cartridge filter located on the passenger side. I will post the part number tomorrow, work for a local Toyota dealer.

Default Re: 2009 Corolla 1.8L 2ZR-FE - Oil Filter Location

There seems to be a little confusion on the 2009 Toyota Corolla/matrix with the 1.8L I4 oil filter. Seen lots of forums, threads and blogs about the oil filter and it's location. The oil filter cartridge is located on passenger (right) side of the engine next to the pan. It is a cartridge stlye, Toyota part #04152-YZZA6. Hope this helps!

Default Re: 2009 Corolla 1.8L 2ZR-FE - Oil Filter Location

Correcting my above post..... 2009 1.8 Dual VVT-I Enigine is a Cartridge Element not spin-on.

Yu need a standard filter CAP wrench to remove the sump cover. Yu replace the "O" ring every OCI.

It is much easier a cartridge to replace than on the 3.5 V6 08 like the on the '08 Highlanders.
