Ok I drive 24 mile trip 1 way to work with my 08 5 speed le and my best is 52.5 mpg with my scan gauge 2. I have my stock goodyear tire mounted back on with 40 psi. My best tank average in the winter was 42.5 with snow tires on so we will see how good I can get with the nice weather.

That is damn good mileage. How fast do you drive?
What's your mileage when calculated? The best we've seen is 40 at 75mph with a few hills.
I usually see 30 in town, and 40 all hiway (75mph).
Well I do 55mph even in a 65 zone. And didn't use cc because i do a better job. I can time my green lights and roll 3/4 mile to stop at stop sign. I don't shut the motor off and roll YET but I mite.
So i reall work for the 52.5. When I caculated the tank average in the winter time with 4 snow tire it was 42.7 for the tank and my scan gauge was 42.6. The 52.5 is on a trip not my over all for a tank but I'll see what I can do.=) and it was 6-7000 less than a prius and no $3000 batery change in 10 years.
Also run mobil 1 and I am going to switch the transmission fluid to redline or royal purple. (only because a 3 gear grind)
Both mine & my bro's 3rd gear have that problem. Mainly when it's cold outside, and it's much better when it warms up. If it ever will here.
Snowbird ski resort just got 24" of snow last night.
I have switched to Amsoil SG in ours, but it didn't seem to take care of it. Shifting feels smoother, but I still have the 3rd gear issue when cold. It grinds mainly when shifting from 2nd to 3rd too quickly ( IMO it's not too quick). But if you let the rpm's drop to almost 1000 before shifting, it goes in smooth.
I guess i really should start driving slower. I'd probably get much better mileage. But 40 mpg is over the window sticker which was listed at 28/37.
If it doesn't get better, i'll be taking mine to the dealer. Even if they don't fix it, they'll have it on record for future occurances.
But isn't the "Current" just the instantaneous MPG? So if you were going down a hill with no pressure on the gas pedel and your scangauge showed 200 MPG, the "Current" would also be 200 MPG too, right? ONLY average calculations from the scan gauge matter, and never the instantaneous.

Please clarify, and thanks,
S.
Actually, i was referring to the 3rd gear grind problem the 5 speed corolla's have.
