I'm at almost 4,000 miles and no issues what so ever except I still feel the breaks have a lot of peddle travel. Wish they had put the 4 wheel disk on my S. I hit a curb running around 30 mph (damn thing was at work and sticks out real close to the road) blew from tire and put a knot on the rear and it bent the front rim. I't hit so hard it put a small buckle dent near my moon roof. Toyota is real proud of those rims.
I'm averaging 35 mpg (checked with calculator) almost every time I fill up. That is no interstate all 2 lane with maybe 20% city driving. I have no doubts I can get at least 40 mpg interstate.
When I change the oil I will use Mobile One 0w-20w as recommended.
Love the car!

What concerns me is you hit so hard the it effected the structural integrity of the car. Toyota builds their cars to transfer impact energy throughout the vehicle's body and "skeleton" and not tranfer that energy to the occupants inside. That was a hard hit. I would have the car checkout to be on the safe side.

Oh trust me I did. I had them look it over while they had it up to put the new wheel and tires on. They said they did not see any damage and the wheel alignment was still good. I may not keep the car that long and may get me the XRS if I can find out what the true mileage is on those. I know they have a larger engine, but with a 5 speed and lower rear-end they should get as good as mine. I do want the 4 wheel disc. Figure I can get top dollar for mine.
Thanks
Bob

Trust me, the 2.4 is not the most fuel efficent 4cyl out there. Its got good "oomph" in the get up and go, but it is lacking in the MPG area. It was great for me since I was getting out of a 4.7L V8. The performance is borderline close to the same pickup as what my '05 DC Tundra would pull, so I'm not really missing the performance aspect so much. I really just miss the growl...
Now the 1.8L on the other hand is great on MPG but I can only assume lacking in the performance catagory. I have not driven one so I cannot testify to it.
I must also say that the XRS has an awesome JBL system in it. Some of the best speakers I've ever had in a vehicle. The whole interrior is pretty nice for what you pay for. No squeeks so far. Everything fits nice.

I have the 2.4 in my 09 Matrix S model. I can get 30 MPG around the city by driving nicely, but driving a little more aggressive, I'm getting 27 MPG.
I'm not complaining since I came from having a 2005 Tundra double cab.
I drive very little city but about 80% rural, no interstate and I'm getting consistent 35 mpg. I had an 06 Corolla S and took a long trip on the interstate and got 40mpg running 70-75 with the air running.
I'm not unhappy with the power of the 1.8 for I am not an aggressive driver but what I would have like to had in my S was the 4 wheel disc, 17" wheels and the 5 speed auto.

I just got back from a trip where I was running about 100% interstate. I went basically from Charlotte to TN so I was going through the mountains. Running 70-80mph, with air, loaded with luggage plus one passenger, I was getting 32mpg there and back.
currybob, how is the passing power with the 1.8? My parents will most likely end up getting a Corolla before too long and it'll be an S long before it'll be an XRS.
I would compare it to driving the 2.4 Camry. The Corolla is lighter and therefore the difference in the engine size is comparable to the hp to weight ratio. They will have no problem the only difference I think might be a little more engine noise when you romp on it. I like the reliability and solid feel of the car. It looks good and has plenty of room for me as well as easy to drive. I also have the stereo upgrade and it has excellent sound but as you have said could use a little more base.

How are the seats in the S? I know my XRS seats have real good cloth with great support. I wasnt sure if thats just an XRS thing or not.
This is not really a good picture, but it'll give you an idea of the XRS seats I have in mine.
If it is anything like the 2.4 Camry then there should be no issue. Those have pretty decent pep and if it still manages to get the kind of MPG you're talking about then they'll be pretty pleased with it.
I like it better than what I have seen in the Camry.

Hmmm... my seats are different. They're more like the 6th option from the left on the seats picture thing, but they're not leather. They sit real well either way.
Hey Freeman
Just put my S on the sell block and ordered the same thing in an XRS. Should be here in a week or two. Know anyone looking for a nice S. I listing it for 19,900. I do have a couple interrested in it but one has to sell their truck first.
I still think I will only lose a mile or two mpg. I probably don't drive like as agressive as you.

Haha no way you drive as aggressive as I do. lol If I could keep my foot out of it for a week then maybe I could tell you what kind of MPG a sane driver would get. I would expect around 29.5MPG to 30MPG going easy on it. I'm sure you'll enjoy the extra pep the XRS has and the looks.
When we bought our corolla the seats in the "S" are what sold us,
we drove them all and I was amazed at how much more supportive and comfortable the seats are than the base model.
My wife liked the lower spoilers and fog lights which threw me she usually doesnt care about that stuff.
Its been fun reading the posts on the corolla they are a great car!
BTW the 1.8 seems to have plenty of pep for a daily driver
