Corolla MatrixGeneral discussion forum for the Toyota Corolla and Toyota Matrix.
This is a discussion thread titled "Engine noise...", within the Corolla Matrix forum, part of the Cars & Vans Forums category.
I have a 2007 Corolla CE with a 5 spd. The engine has always been noisy until warmed up in the cold weather, sounds like valve train noise, but goes away after a few minutes of warm up running.
It is now summer time and I still have the engine noise until warmed up, albeit for a shorter time since it warms up quicker in the warm weather.
I noticed the other day, that when the engine is "clacking away" during warm up, if I put it in gear and slowly release the clutch until the engine is loaded a bit the noise stops and starts immediatly again when I press the clutch back in.
Anyone experience this engine noise in thier Corolla???
I have the 08 5-speed & haven't noticed these noises.
What oil you running?
I replaced the original oil at 2k miles with mobil one & ran until 5k. Then replaced with Amsoil 5w30 full synthetic. Now has 12k on it with the same amsoil & i've replace'd the oem filter twice.
The oil may have something to do with it. Dunno. I know it made a world of difference on our 08 gmc van with the noisy 6.0 motor.
I am running Mobil 1 fully synthetic 5W30 and change it more often than necessary, usually at 2,500 - 3,000 mile intervals.
The engine is not extremely noisy, just noisy enough to make me concerned. It may be normal, but if I can get a chance, I may take it to the dealer before the warranty expires, although they will probably say that it is normal, but at least it will be on record for what ever that's worth...
A cheap filter will go by-pass on engine sartup for as long as a few minutes until yu get a full flow. The filters by-pass valve gets lazy. This causes your head to be noisey . This is the noise that yu hear ( valve train/tappet noise).
Just thinking from a different pesrpective.
BTW, 5W30 M1 ( what I use)tends to be on the thinner weight side of the scale. Not that it's a bad thing at all. But would contribute to some more noise.
That's an interesting theory with the oil filter... I've been using the OEM Toyota filters since new. Although they are Toyota filters, I don't think they may be of the highest quality, there are probably better aftermarket filters available.
I've never experienced this with my Tundra and I've been using Toyota filters, but it is a different animal.

Thanks for your input!
What do you hope to gain by changing out the oil so frequently, and excellent synthetic oil at that? Doing this will not add any more protection, nor benefit to your engine, and all it results in is waste of time and money, and this gives the dillusion of added protection.
Synthetic is only good if (1) you perform extended drains, and that means 8,000 to 10,000 or more miles per drain, and (2) 0W oils (synthetic only) provide faster circulation of protection during first start up of the day. Oh, and (3) synthetic 0W grade oils will give 1% to 2% better MPG. These are things synthetic do better then dino/mineral oil.
Once the oil is up to operating temperature, synthetic will NOT protect much better then normal dino/synthetic oil.
As to extended drains, I'd not do this until the car is out of warranty just in case you have a problem, and the Stealership wants to know if you changed the oil at 5,000 miles or less, and again for warrantly issues only.
Hey,
I had the same experience myself and have had the noise for some time. I thought it was in the valve train too, but I looked further and found it to be the Serpentine belt tensioner that was making the "clacking" noise. I replaced it(which is a little pain in the butt because of NO ROOM to work with) and the noise went away. At 163,253 on my 04 corolla and having to only replace the tensioner and replace the oil pan gasket, I'm not complaining. Good luck and hope that gets you in the right direction. Dave
