P2610: ECM/PCM Internal Engine Off Timer Performance

I have a 2005 Corolla with 65,000 miles and the check engine light came on a few days ago. I initially checked to make sure the gas cap was on correclty (tightened with 3 clicks - it was. Filled up tank with gas - no difference)...
So a friend of mine hooked up his code reader and pulled up P2610: ECM/PCM Internal Engine Off Timer Performance.
I called my local Toyota dealership and they told me they would have to read off the code and for that they would charge me $115 and if it is indeed P2610 then they would replace the ECM (Engine Control Module) at no charge - http://highlanderclub.ru/files/manua...4h/cip2610.pdf

Question: why would I need to pay them $115 just to read the same code?! what are my options? I asked them about the ECM - it costs $1200 so no way am I buying it and installing it myself...
should I ask a different Toyota dealership?

Page 7 of the Owner's Warranty Information booklet says "Repairs made at No Charge - Repairs and adjustments covered by these warranties are made at no charge for parts and labor" - so why they want to charge me? I spoke with a service adviser; should I talk to the manager?

That code is an ECM, no IF's and's or but's. The ECM is 8/80 and under warranty.....period!!! end of story!!! They cannot charge you if it is warranty.

DTC P2610 is set if an internal ECM problem is detected. Diagnostic procedures are not required. ECM
replacement is required. Read freeze frame data using a hand−held tester or OBD II scan tool. Freeze frame data record the
engine condition when malfunctions are detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help
determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air−fuel
ratio was lean or rich, and other data, from the time the malfunction occurred.

That doesnt make sense. If its under warranty, then its under warranty. They should replace it for free... thats what a warranty is. I'd call and check with another dealer at least.

That is correct. thanks you guys for the additional info... once I saw your reply I called them back again to confirm...Yes, the initial $115 fee will be waived if the problem turns out to be P2610 (or any other code that is covered under the 8/80 warranty).


I cleared the code by removing the negative battery cable so I can't take it in now... will do so when the code reappears again...

They told me ECM controls air/fuel mixture levels.. not changing it will stall the car.. better change it if it's under warranty...

Wonder why these things fail in the first place and how long the second one will last! do they give any warranty on the new one?
I heard this part costs $1000+

The new one falls under the 8/80 from the IN SERVICE DATE of the vehicle, or 1/12 parts replacement. Which ever lasts longer.
They are DELCO MADE........ do I need to say anymore.?
Ever since GM started involvement with TOYOTA (1964), they have become more and more involved and their quality control has gone way down, but thats another forum..

Just curious, you know who made them before Delco?

Service advisor did tell me he's seen quite a few Corollas needing the ECM to be replaced... go figure again!

DENSO or AISAIN Made in Japan not mexico, like most of the new ones. Yes there are a few TSB's for corolla ECU's..

Well, after driving for about 60 miles the check engine light came back on...
Scheduled service at my local Toyota dealership for this Saturday...
I'll ask them to hand me the old part (if acceptable)

If it is warranty(which it should be), they can not give you the old part. We have to turn them back in to Toyota, either as a core or part of the exchange program. ECU's fall into the exchange program.

I see... so as part of the part exchange do they fix the defective part(s), reuse, or recycle?

As far as I know they rebuild them and send them back out as remanufactured units.
Very low failure rate w/ a reman unit.

Hmmm.... I hope the quality of their electronics is good in the 10th gens. I got the extended warranty mostly because of things like the "electronic steering pump."

Let us know how they treat ya and if they get things straightened out for ya.

A very WISE decision
I work for Toyota (shhhhhhh, don't tell), and I have the Platinum Toyota Extracare for both my vehicles for the exact same reason.

Went into the dealership today and they found code P2716 Harsh Shift TSB TC014-06 - which they replaced the ECM.

Wonder if resetting the codes by removing the negative battery cable caused it to relay a different code... I was expecting P2610... nevertheless the ECM had to be replaced in both cases.

The ecu is righ below the glove box
P2716 is also a very common code
We change 3-4 ecu for 05-06 corolla/matrix every week
All the replacement ecu's have been perfect so far.
