Brakes 08 Ce Corolla

I had a dog run out in front of me the pther day I slammed on the brakes and thank goodness I missed the dog. When I stepped on the accelerated pedal it felt like the brakes were still locked up. I got off the gas and back on it again and after about a few more feet everything was normal again. Car does not have abs. Anyone exoerience this? Seems like the car is working fine when I leave from a light.Thanks for any input
