Its good that you enjoy your Matrixes, at the same time I find it very hard to believe that the Matrix has more value than an Outback. First thing that anyone needs to consider is that these two vehicles are in two seperate classes and that the Matrix would roughly compete more in the Subaru Forester's class.
Nonetheless I'd say that both vehicles lead their own respective classes in value, that being said though the Outback would easily be more of a value within its class or at least moreso than the Matrix would. The Outback realistically could go head to head with the higher class Volvo wagons and wipe the board with them, let alone averaging at least $10,000 less for comparable models. Its a heck of a value for the price range in which its in, its hard to find a vehicle with state-of-the-art AWD, great performance, versatility of an SUV, etc, etc, etc for anywhere near the price.
The Matrix is a compact wagon, not mid or full size like the Outback. It really doesn't outshine the Outback in any category minus the obvious (MPG, etc.). I don't know what you meant in your "value" statement, I'm percieving it as that you feel because the Matrix has a lower purchase cost that that automatically qualifies it as a better value...
