Corolla MatrixGeneral discussion forum for the Toyota Corolla and Toyota Matrix.
This is a discussion thread titled "Matrix serpentine belt", within the Corolla Matrix forum, part of the Cars & Vans Forums category.
My wife's 2003 Matrix has had the serpentine belt replaced twice now after only 30000 miles. Anyone else run into this problem? This isn't something I want to happen routinely after the vehicle goes past warrenty.
I also have a 2003 Matrix. Mine is an XR. I have 41000 miles and have not had any problems from my belt. Look over on matrixowners.com. There are alot of good resources over there. I have the same screen name over there.

I'll bet it's an XRS? Same problem and they will tell you it's normal to squeek in the morning. Third belt has gone at 66000, one every 20,000 or so. I bought a belt. Anyone know how to access the installation info on this site?
Put some WD-40, or bees wax on it or turn up the audio system to drown out the squeek! My wife's Sienna will squeek after damp weather too. I run a fleet of Matrix's and have only replaced the serpintine belts after 150K on them and only the belts that show cracking or fraying.

Please specify whether you have an XRS matris or standard matrix (XR etc.). The XRS redlines near 8200 rpm. My serpentine belt has been glazed. I worry that there is only one standard belt for the matrix and that it cannot handle the extra RPM in an XRS. My car sees near redline each time I drive.
My wife's 05 XR chirps alot too. I haven't done anything with it yet, but I'll try a new belt soon and see how it goes. I don't have high hopes for it though as her '03 corolla did the same thing too and had 3 belts and 2 tensioners put on in less than 36k miles to no avail.
Just got off the phone with Toyota corporate on this issue. They state that if they get enough calls on the issue that they will start an investigation. If they find that the issue is warranted then they will post a bulletin on it, which allows for additional options for them (i.e. extended warranties or a recall).
Otherwise, the only remedy is to sue through your states lemon law legislation. This is effective when you have clearly documented an issue that has come up repeatedly under warrantly.
Also speak with your dealerships customer relations manager, as this individual has more authority.

We are also onto our second serpentine belt. We are wondering if this is why toyota has discontinued the XRS.
No...not the reason why XRS is gone.
May reasons for a belt to squeak... Starting with a defective belt in the MFR. process. Incorrect belt tension will give premature wear and tear and Friction( source of noise.
Bear in mind ,Glazing of the pulleys is never adressed. This is very important, as a new belt will just end up in same condition because pulleys are fouled out and glazed.
I would force Toyota to replace one or more pulleys along with a new belt.
any of you guys live on or drive on dirt/gravel roads. or even park on them? dust and tiny rocks get in the grooves of the belt thus creating the rocks to crush and rub on the pulleys. this can create loud squealing. an easy fix is to take a wire brush and place on the inside of the belt (groove side) and press firmly against the belt while car is running. this will clean out most of the debris that has built up in the grooves. make sure to hold brush firmly! and watch for the fan! i live in the country so i do this often. i was also a mechanic, and if your not confident on sticking your hands into running motors.....do not attempt it lol.

Yes it is and they have to "bleed" the tensioner after install in order for it to work properly.
