Agreed, the lines of the Pontiac weren’t the best in the world but I digress. I didn’t, however, much care for the insides of the MR2 back then, especially how the dash was set up in pods.

When we got the Spyder I actually was looking at a Corolla as well. It was the XRS, I believe. Seems to me it had our basic Corolla engine but it was putting out something like 170 horse. What’s up with all the different horsepower ratings from basically the same 1.8-liter engine? Is it all the same engine with a different ECU chip?

Not quite sure what the differences are as far as the engines go. I know that the Corollas (except the XRS) have the VVT-i which put out 130HP @ 6000rpm with 125lbs-ft @ 4200 rpm. The XRS is the same 1.8-liter but it says it has the VVTL-i which puts out 170HP @ 7600 rpm with 127lbs-ft @ 4400 rpm. I just can't remember what our salesman said the "L" stands for on the VVT"L"-i for the XRS. Lift maybe? Like ya said, it must just be an ECU change to get the added HP's for the XRS. I actually wish I would have driven one as that would probably be a fast one @ 170 HP's. The wife wouldn't go for a manual anyway but I am sure it would have been fun to drive..... I do like the interior look of the XRS. Although the "S" has a good interior as well. Just absolutly love the guages on it. I really want to change my guages on the Tundra now

I work four 10's at the 'ol shop and now that we have the Corolla, I will take it to work at least twice a week to save on the Tundras gas. Soon I will start keeping track of the MPG's and report back.

I have been to a couple of different site for Corollas but I figured we could get some threads going for them here since we have paid for it anyway (cars/trucks and the site... ).....

Well, here is the latest... We have now owned the Corolla for about a month and a half. Short amount of time but we are still very happy with the purchase . We are averaging 32 MPG with it and that is about 85% city, 15% HWY miles. We took a little "road trip" last weekend into the mountains (not a huge change in elevation but some good winding roads) and I gotta say that it was sure fun to drive. I can only imagine what it would be like to have some real good performance tires on the thing. It handled GREAT!! It is an automatic and the transmission shifting was fantasitic! The two things I would change if I had the chance would be to make the drivers seat go back a few more inches (I am 6'3") and to add about 20 more HP to the engine. Of course adding some more ponys would de-grade the MPG and with gas prices right now, I am content with it's 130 HP. Last weekend was also the first time that I sat in the back seat . For the size of vehicle it is, I gotta say that I was impressed with the amount of room that it had in the back. Well, that is the update for now.
FIRESCOOBY, thanks for the link to the Corolla site. I checked it out and that is the best site so far (besides of course TS for info on the Corolla).
