I have a 1997 geo prizm 1.6 5spd and it won't stop pinging. When i put prem fuel in it did the same thing. it only happens when under heard acceleration and going up hill. Could i ne losing compresion?

The GEO is a COROLLA IN DRAG LOL
I would make sure the timing belt hasnt slipped. (advanced timing will ping all the time, even with premium)
I would also make sure the EGR system is working and not plugged. EGR cools the combustion chamber to help reduce emissions and PINGING.
Are you sure it isnt an exhaust leak, corrollas are known for cracking exhaust manifolds.

I'd lean toward the it's probably time for tune up with new filters (air and fuel) and really good cleaning of the TB/intake/cumbustion chamber. BG44K or Seafoam at least if not a professional doing the "decarbonizing". Dirty injectors combined with carbon buildup under load will definitely cause ping.

My '93 had a cracked manifold once but it didn't make a ping sound. Mine also doesn't have an EGR system but not sure about the 97+ ones.

Depended on exact year and where it was originally sold. You'd be surprised at the amount of CALIFORNIA vehicles we get in NV. He didnt say if his was cal spec, just thought i'd throw it out.
