Hi,
I just signed up today and already need some help/advice. Does anyone know where I can buy the Toyota tool kit for removal and replacement of the valve shims? I have a 90 Corolla and one cylinder (#2) is low compression. It has only 70 psi. and the other three are all 195+. I checked the valve lash and found one of the intakes @ .017 and one of the exhausts @ .0015 on #2 cylinder. Could these being out of spec cause the low compression? I would buy the removal tool and bring them into spec if I could find a source. Can anyone help?? TIA for your help
Al
OTONWA TOOL COMPANY sellw what your looking for, but I dont think they sell to the public.
Truthfully its easier to remove the timing belt and then the camshaft than using that tool. Its a pain in the drain.
But with the valves being that tight, I would say you have a sever valve problem. The valves may have tuliped and sunk into the head causing them to tighten up on the clearance. Adjusting them looser wont help anything. At the minimum you need to remove the head and have a proper valve job done, or do it yourself. With the head off and the cam out you wont need a special tool.
Just my $.02

Victor I think the name might be Owatona Tool Company or OTC. They make a lot of factory service tools for the industry and for otc (over the counter sales) at major auto parts stores like NAPA. It's located in Owatona, MN just off the I-35 south of Minneapolis.

If a combo of all these whizz bangs met their claims you'd have to siphon gas out of your tank every second day and sell the excess horsepower on the third????
If your engine doesn't consume ANY oil it will seize???
Some people should not be allowed access to tools without books!!!

Don't feel bad Victor I screwed up my response by mis-spelling Owatonna and shorting the poor city one of it's n's. I just looked at their Catalog and I did not see that tool shown so like you said it may be proprietary to Toyota service personnel.

I dont feel bad, dont you worry.
I found the tool and it says:
OTC TOYOTA
Part# 09248-05010-01
Hope he has good luck at finding it.
But I still think there is more of an issue than meets the eye.

Thanks to all who responded and for the advice. I just bought the car a few months ago and the seller told me that he had just replaced the HG so there could be more issues than he wanted to mess with and that's why he dumped the car. If I pull the head and camshaft like you suggested, how do you adjust the clearance with the cam removed? If there is major damage to the head, do you know of a good source to buy a rebuilt and approximate cost? TIA for your help.

AHHHHHH, Now.....You just opened another can of worms.
When he did the headgasket did he return all the shims to their correct location or just install them anywhere????? I doubt he knows.
When replacing a headgasket, probably from overheating, its a good idea for a machine shop to check the valves, not only can the headsurface warp but so can the place where the valve seats are located. The valves need to be check for proper seating, then adjusted accordingly.
To adjust the valve clearance properly you need to measure the clearance as they sit (cams installed), when you take it apart you measure the thickness of the shim (Toyota has a mathematical formula for this). Then you replace the shim with a thicker or thinner shim depending on what is needed. With the head off the vehile it is easy to install the cam and re-check the valve clearance until you think you have it correctly.
I have attached a how to check and adjust the valves.
You can try to do it on the car like you wanted, but it might be easier to remove the head and start from scratch, since you dont know what has been done before. Let a machine shop check to make sure all the valves are seating properly or lap them in yourself and check.
Good Luck

Hi Mustang,
I am in the process of doing the head gasket and have taken the head into a machine shop for valve work, etc. I have decided to go ahead with the timing belt and water pump replacemant while everything is apart. Would it be possible for you to send me attachments from the repair manual covering the timing belt and water pump replacement as you did for the head removal. It was a great help in removing the head and I need some further guidance on the other repairs. TIA for your help. Al
Hi, I read your post. The simplest tool is an OTC tool similar to the simple Bartec tool, and has no real diagnostic capability at all. You can't do anything with it unless the car is in the "learn" mode, in which case it will excite the sensor and the only way you know it worked properly is if you get a honk of the horn indicating the sensor sent its info to the TPMS computer in the car.
Have a nice day...
I found the OTC TOYOTA Part# 09248-05010-01 kit easy to use. One tool depresses the valve lifter. Another holds the lifter compressed. Then you use a small screwdriver to dislodge and lift the valve adjusting shim upward and then a magnet to fully pull the shim out. Other companies besides OTC make this toolkit and sell them on ebay for a lower price.
You can also get by without the special tool kit if you are careful.
1. Use 3 layers of duct tape on a screwdriver tip and use it to depress the valve lifter without marring the lifter.
2. Tape a hardware store magnet to a screwdriver. With the valve lifter depressed, use the magnet to grab the valve adjusting shim and lift it out.
