i have an intermitant problem with my 1989 corolla. it runs fine, then suddenly it runs poorly, looses all power, blows black smoke and almost dies. then it comes back to normal and runs fine. the entire episode might just last a few minutes. for the life of me i cant figure it out.

Is ir EFI or CARB? Late 89= EFI/ Early 89= Carb

Can you pull a code? Check engine light?

If it is CARB the first thing I would say , is that it is the AAP Diaphram closing and shooting extra fuel into the engine or the diaphram is leaking.Usually the plug in cylinder #4 turns black or fouls.

If it is EFI, then I would be looking at the EFI TEMP SENSOR or the Coil in the distributor.

the engine has a carb. i don't see any check engine light so i don't know if i can check the code.I have had this problem twice so far. today it ran fine. It may be coincidence but it seems to do it when its raining heavy. thank you for your input. is there any way i can check for the code or check the carb or coil?

Spray the windshield with water to simulate rain and see if it dies.
If the windshield leaks, it is possible to leak down the drivers/passenger side "A" pillars and down into the vehicle and it may be getting some electrical things wet. Check inside the drivers and passenger side kick panels.
IGNITION COIL PRIMARY resistance 1.3-1.5 ohms

Ignition Coil SECONDARY resistance 10.2K-13.8K ohms

i will try your suggestion. now that i think about it the problem happened another time in the rain a few weeks ago. i thought it was something else but it must have been the same thing. I'm starting to think it could be the ignition system in the distributor housing. so far it hasn't rained and the car has been fine. i joined caa just in case. hope it doesn't rain untill my coverage kicks in. thanks again for your suggestions. sounds like you know what your talking about.
