Corolla MatrixGeneral discussion forum for the Toyota Corolla and Toyota Matrix.
This is a discussion thread titled "Toyota Matrix vs. Honda Fit", within the Corolla Matrix forum, part of the Cars & Vans Forums category.
test drove em both. had the fit overnight. the ONLY reason we went with the matrix was the fact that the fit could not support a roof rack. ie; you can not put a roof rack on the fit. the fit was just as peppy if not more so with the paddle shift. the interior is just a BIT smaller. and the fit gets around 50MPG!!!! but we are avid paddlers and i dont like to take the tundra on long hauls so the canoe goes on our car. it was a MUST to have roof rack capability

yep, 52mpg it says on the sticker.....but we all know how that works.....nonetheless its pretty impressive fuel mileage and honda quality is as good as toyota's....dare i say...if not better. i just sold a 92 accord with 298,000km's on it to a young lad this spring. that thing cost me $1500 bucks in repairs (not maintenance) in that time. it was an ex...very well equipped, power everything...and EVERYTHING still works! VERY impressive, and it still runs like a top.
that being said i am a toyota guy...became one after wrenchin on all the manu's makes. it wasn't a hard decision. but i am also not fooled by brand loyalness! they ALL break.....some less then others.

I've got 3 2007 Fit's w/ close to 100 K on them now and 4 2005 Matrix's with 150-220K on them. We do highway courier duty with these vehicles on the lonesome prairie. The Fit's will give me 35MPG's routinely...if the headwinds are bad it may be less. The Matrix will get us 2-3 MPG's less on the same route. Some drivers like the Fit better, some like the Matrix better. It's interesting to hear them compare the two...
All time best MPG's are:
Fit = 38 MPG
Matrix = 35 MPG
Remember, we drive 65 mph on the 2-lane and 75 mph on the Interstate - legally. I know some of my drivers push way beyond that. Even at 55 MPH I simply don't believe the Fit would EVER give 50 MPG's, unless they get a hybrid version...
This year I bought one Hyundai Accent GS hatchback. It was VERY cheap and has about 10K on it already. Be interesting to see how it holds up, the mileage on it is similar so far to the Matrix but it has noticably less acceleration power. It holds it's own once it gets to speeed tho'.

wow. it really is amazin how much each car varies. i am averaging 38mpg with my matrix. my aunt bought the FIT. she is averaging 45mpg. she is an RCMP officer in BC. she drives aprox. 30km's a day mostly highway. she is ANAL about EVERYTHING. she is the one who tolf me about the fit. sucks that you are only getting those mpg's....although my aunt does drive like a grandma..lol i can just imagine how your employee's drive em!

Keep us up to date on Accent. I am interest in knowing real world reliability and MPG.
Also, do you keep track of maintenance for operating cost?

Speed really drops the mileage, so does wind...however...I don't believe 45 MPG's from a Fit. not even at a steady 55 MPH. Perhaps something was miscalculated from Km's per / Imperial gallon (in Canada)?
Also, Ethanol in the gas (sold her as 89 octane mid-grade) will drop the mileage as well.

Yes...you bet. Mostly it's tires and oil, a few wipers and about 2-3 windshields a year! Of course, when I figure my costs / per mile I also have to add in driver wages and benefits.
I'm also curious about the Hyundai, I will be buying 3 more cars next year and maybe I'll go that route again? Unless, I also hear Honda may do a hatchback on the Civic?
The Hyundai is made a little cheaper, you can feel it and notice it. But that's body integrity, paint, sound deadening, etc...
So far the factory tires are impressive. We've had some real crap on the Matrix's. A few new sets were hamburger at 10K and they aren't covered under warranty, of course. They must've really bought some cheapies at the factory!

Naw, not really. They are older guys and they team share for the most part. That being said, I do have 2 that mostly drive one route and other routes that are driving by a (team-share) pair. It's easy to tell the guys that get better mileage and certain routes are more efficient overall, etc...in fact, it fascinates me to track the differences - month to month.

Saw the Fit today...it will work great for courier vehicles. Plenty of transport space in the back with the seats down and an amazing amount of leg-room for a person over 6 feet tall.
A little low to the ground, but the side-air bags are an improvement over the Matrix and so is the one piece wheels. We are always losing Matrix hubcaps and they are very $$$ to replace! The Sport model will cost about the same or less than the base model Matrix's we've been buying.
Now, can the dealer come up with three white ones by June or August! ??
AND...
Will they want sticker or discount it a little?
Hey there, I agree! I test drove a Fit a couple weeks ago and absolutely loved it. It drives well, and seems to have alot of respect for people who like to drive, considering its price and target market. Space is a no brainer in the Fit in my opinion...there's a good bit to begin with, and the Magic Seat folds in some nifty ways to open up a good bit of space. For when you have human cargo there seems to be plenty of space for your friends. I'd have to fill it up with people to know for sure, but it looks big inside. I liked it...but to each his own I suppose. That first guy who replied sounds like a bit of a Honda hater to me... But take the Fit for what it is: a small, lightweight compact that swallows more stuff than it looks like it could. Seriously! :] The Matrix is a good attempt from Toyota at being a sporty Corolla Wagon...but fuel pumps shouldn't be such a big deal, and the Fit [in my opinion] gives the Matrix a run for its money. TRY and drive a Fit and Matrix back to back and decide for yourself...it's all a matter or preference. Let us know how it goes =]

Will Honda offer the fit with 4WD?
Toyota use to offer the Matrix in 4WD (AWD).
Boy I wouldn't hold my breath on that one. Not sure where they'd put the hardware. More likely they'd do a hybrid and even that would be a longshot, based on overall sales...

I just purchased a 2008 Matrix XR. I have a 135 mile daily commute so MPG was one thing that led me to the Matrix. So far I'm impressed with it. I've owned a number of corollas and the Matrix seems much more refined (hard to put into words).
I went with the manual tranny....anyone heard of any issues with that?

Trannys are strong...even the autos. We forget to get the fluid changed (every 40-50K) sometimes and never have any troubles. I am approaching 300K on a couple of the Matrix's we have.
However, I would disagree that the Matrix is more refined. The Corolla's rode much better, with less noise than the standard Matrix. Maybe the XR has more sound deadening in it?
All my drivers unanimously agree ~ they preferred the ride of the Corolla to the Matirx. The main difference and reason why we haven't bought any more Corolla's is the cargo carrying ability for what we do...
Now the Fit vs. Matrix is a different story. No two drivers agree! Some hate the Fit, some love it.
Stay away from ethanol in these vehicles tho', or you'll be putting catalytic converters and O2 sensors in them! It cuts MPG's too...stay with the 87 (85 in the Mtns.) octane. JMHO
