Yes i do have alot of milleage .. 233 000 km do be exact :P ... i checked myself under the car ... and i saw a heatshield or somesort that was around the exhaust where the pipe is connected to the engine ... i notice the was 2 bolts that was missing .. and the heat shield was loose ...i banged a little bit on the catalyc with my hand and heard like something loose around where the heat sheild is .. and when i held the heat shield with my hands tight the noise would stop when i hit ... and i tryed to tight the heat shield as tight as i could with the bolts ... but it would still make the noise ... and i dont see how water would make the noise louder ? im going tonight to get it checked once again ... hopefully he can find the problem ... because i hate driving around with a car that sounds like a freaking old car ... something else ... one really rainy day i was driving and i drove through a real big puddle of water right after the car had trouble idling ... it almost stalled .. and if i would give it gas well nothing happened ... i had lost all the power in the engine ... the car could hardly drive ... i though something bad happened to the engine .. it kept choking for a bit .. then after it came back to normal ... what could make this happen ? ... could water have affected the oxygen sensor and make the car go crazy ? ... or would have water been able to get in the engine ? .. if so how could that happened ? ... it only did that to me once ...anyways if it happened to anyone else ... plz tell me what the problem was and if it can cause damage to the car .... thanks for the help !

could be some moisture got sucked into the air filter and caused the problem. i have an older car and sometimes when i run it through an auto car wash, the spary from the high pressure will cause the engine to cough and sputter a bit when the spray nozzles get up to the corner where the intake is. a big puddle hit fast enough could cause a similar condition. most of the time, the manufacturer will try to locate the engine intake in a way where this problem is minimized, but under certain conditions, there is always a chance that some spray will find it's way into the intake somehow.

sounds like the heat shield is the problem. those bolts are notorious for rusting off. you may need to have someone drill a new mounting hole or try some large hose clamps if that is possible depending on how the shield is mounted. i agree, it's a very annoying sound. don't remove the shields though, they are there for good reason.

You could be right about the intake ... i though of it alot ... because i took out the airbox and installed a short air intake ... i looked around the filter cone and couldnt see where water could have came in ... it is possible ... i was thinking of trying to put something under the cone to cover it from water coming up ... now that you say that ill check it out more later .... and for the heat shield yes i think the bolts rusted off .. i tryed to take the heat shield off to see better maybe something had fell in between the heat shield and the exhaust which would move around and make noise ... but i couldnt take it off ... i didnt want to break it cause like you said it was put there for a reason ... so im gonna wait for tonight and ask the mecanic (who has more experience then me) to take it off and chek it the noise still exists after removing it ... thanks alot for your help ... that problem was bothering me for a while and i was getting tired of it .

I brought the car to the garage today and the guy checked it out again ... they said they had a similar problem about week ago about a corolla which would make the same ratling noise under pressure or some sort ... they changed the donut attached to the manifold ... said it would cost like 50 $ for the piece and would take about an hour and a half ... i said ok you can order it and ill get it changed next week .. i hope it fixes the problem

I also have a starting problem on my 98 Corolla VE. When I turn the key to start position I hear a continuous clicking sound from engine compartment. The speedometer needle jumps partially up. Any thoughts on this. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you for your time.

Is this an automatic or standard?

Sometimes it will do this once or twice and then start, other times it just won't start for a while after dozens of tries and then we try it later and it starts. The battery was about 4 years old so I took it in to our local Advance Auto Parts store for a replacement and they checked it and found that it was still good with over 550 CCAs. I then had them check the starter and alternator and both checked out okay with their testing equipment. They suggested it could be a bad ground or the ignition switch could be going bad. The strange thing is it never acted up when they were checking it - started first time each time I tried it. I get it home and it acts up again. I just recently tried it after my daughter couldn't get it to start and I was able to start it about 10 times in a row before it started clicking a few times then starting. I'm leaning towards some sort of relay or starter problem but I would like to throw this out and see if anyone has had similar problems and what they did to fix it.

Thanks!
