Default 2001 corolla check engine P0446

Hello There,

I am a new bee here. This is a great work to learn and save some. my 2001 corolla have check engine light recently, it got 2 codes, P0446 and P0446 (both similar) at free Autozone check.

What is it? How to fix it? Is it easy to do it myself or go to mechanics/dealership? Post me some detail with manual pages if possible.

Appreciate you help!!!

Thanks,

RD

I have been watching P0446 engine light since my first post here in Aug 2006. Then the engine light went off automatically for 4 to 5 month in freezing winter and suddenly it came back in start of spring when temp was about 56 degree F in end of march 2007.

I have been tried to replaced the fuel tank cap and filling the tank sometime full and half to see its overfill problem, but not. Why? What could be wrong with respect to cold and hot weather?

Any help would be appricited!!

Tx, RD

It was VSV (voltage solenoid valve)for pressure switching valve on the canister. The tech had removed the canister and replaced the bad VSV and then reinstalled the canister. It was $67 for parts and $147 for 1.5 hour labor at local repair shop. MEL gone even after drove 200 miles.

Thank god, I haven't tried this time Grave yard dealer that would cost me whole canister replacement for $395 and labor of 2 to 3 hours, total could pass $600.

Hey...God! show them that there is word called HONESTY to these dealers. They are out of control. Next time I go with a car that comes with 100,000 miles - peace of mind.

Thank you for help and great work.

RD

My 2000 corolla CE light turned on when it was about 49,800 Mile. I first changed the gas tank cap and reset the light. But after about 180 mile, the light turned on again. I bought an ELM327 USB from ebay to read the code and it was P0446. Asked a dealer, it will cost about $500 to fix. So I replaced the Pressure Sensor Switching Valve (VSV)next to the charcoal canister and clean the code. It cotsed me about $55. More than 500 miles now the light stays off and I also got the state emission test pass. The old VSV turns out to be always on. The air could be blow through two holes without connecting to the battery while it should not according to the repair manual.

Does anyone have the part number for the VSV? Or another name for it?
