This is a discussion thread titled "bug removal", within the Detailing forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Whats the best way to get rid of the dead bugs and other small contaminants off the front bumper of the truck from driving down the interstate? I used goo-be-gone on my dads silverado and that worked well, but i didnt want to use it on my truck not knowing if its safe, as it did say it could damaged automotive paints.....washing the truck doesnt seem to get rid of them no matter how hard i scrub the bumper...

A REAL truck.
Go to AutoZone, PartsPlus etc. and get a mesh lined sponge. Moisten with water and the bugs/debris come right off. It's made just for bug removal.
Won't scratch the paint as the mesh is a fine, soft material.

hi , if you use a bug net make sure it has been soaking for a month in soapy water, or you will scratch your paint!
i have owned my own detailing buss., for 20 +years.
high end.
i will give you something, not many know about ,and it will most likely not cost you a penny, ever.
dryer sheets. these are the small sheets you or your wife /mom, etc, through into the dryer when you are drying your cloths to make them ,smell good, stay soft, and not wrinkle.
you can even use the old 1's. they don't have to be new.
just wet and watch the bugs disolve, right in front of your eye's.
regards,
russ
The best way to remove bugs is......WD-40, yes WD-40.
We have those "love bugs" here in the south that are very acidic.
I had a friend recommend looking up "1000 uses for WD-40". I tried it and they wipe right off.
I also recommend re-waxing after use.
I am sure that Brandon will reply later on this...Mr wealth of detailing knowledge.
Yeah, I have heard of WD-40 and dryer sheets. I personally just use a bug sponge and a special bug-removal chemical. Usually it's something like Duragloss #471 Bug-Off or Purple Power at 10:1.
Pre-soaking is the key to removing bugs. Also if your truck is waxed, it makes bugs not stick so well.
I have never heard of the bug sponge having to sit in soapy water for a month, I dunno bout that one. I have used many bug sponges for years that are new without scratching.

The key is not letting the bugs sit for long periods without removing. I keep a bug sponge in my truck and i clean them off every couple days. Once they bake in the sun for a few days they are impossible to get off.
Also, I've used a claybar to take off lovebugs before. I don't see how this could cause problems with the paint in any way. It worked good. Now I just use Duragloss 471. Fast and easy
