OK. Here's the situation.

Two weeks ago, I bought a 2002 Corolla to use as a work commute car. (100 miles round trip a day in the 15mpg Tundra just wasn't cutting it anymore).

Anyway, I decided to do some work on it yesterday, and after washing and waxing the top, I still noticed what appeared to be water spots.

I'm wondering if the previous owner (don't know who it is; I bought it from a dealer) might have tried to wax it without proper washing and drying, or perhaps waxed over tree sap residue.

After I saw what the top looked like, I didn't do any more on it.

What do you think? De-wax it and do a clay job, or what?

Yeah, just wash it again and clay or polish the roof. Water spots will come out no problem, but water etching wont. Is the middle of the spots kinda crinkeld?

I would try to clay the roof first and then if that doesnt do the trick try polishing.

Water etching: is that another name for Acid Rain damage?

It can be any type of hard water that gets baked onto the paint.

Yeah, water spotting is just like if you went through a rainstorm and then water dried on the car. Water Etching is actually when the minerals in the spotting eats through the clear on the paint. Etching cannot be removed with anything except wetsanding.
