This is a discussion thread titled "Best way to wash black paint?", within the Detailing forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I washed my truck at the high pressure car wash and it didn't cut all the dirt, gonna have to be scrubbed. Not exicited about it and I don't want to leave swirl marks. What is the best way to prevent swirl marks?
use a good soap...... only wash one section at a time.... soap up and rinse before moving to another section....... dry completely with a microfiber towel...... then use a good wax on the entire vehicle. Also, do not wash your truck at the local high pressure wash or any other public wash...... unless it is touchless (but the touchless never gets the dirt off of my truck)..... because you are just putting everyone else's dirt and grit all over your truck and causing swirlies in the process.

Thanks, wasn't aware of the detailing thread. I only use touchless carwashes. I've had a black truck for years and I did put swirl marks in it from hand washing and now I'm just paranoid about my tundra get them. Shoulda got another color I guess.
use a very soft sheepskin washmit that has long fibers to trap the dirt. use a ton of soap and as stated above, only one section at a time. when washing and rinsing each section make sure to rinse the whole truck down each time too- doesnt do much good to was the fender, rinse it, wash the door, rinse it and wash the bed and rinse it to find the fender is now water spotted...keep it rinsed down so the water doesnt dry on it. then use a chamois to carefully dry it. also, NEVER wash in circles or dry in circles...if u have somethign that will cause a fine scratch going in a straight line is much less noticable of a scratch than in circles over and over....good luck. and keep wax on it alot.

Black is the best (IMO) if you are willing to invest the time into maintaining it

I learned a trick regarding the rinsing step of a good wash...One I haven't seen in these threads yet, so forgive me if I'm repeating...
Using a spray nozzle is best for overall wetting and rinsing, continiuing to keep entire vehicle wet until youre done.
Now, remove the nozzle from the hose (turn water off first!). Turn it on just enough for a moderate flow of water straight from the hose end. It's a good idea to use a plastic hose coupling here.
Start from the highest point, hold the hose about three inches from the surface, and let the water flow in sheets off the body. Move the hose around slowly, working your way down the windows, hood, fenders, etc. The water will flow off in sheets, leaving only the smallest beads of water.
Open your hood, to allow water to drain out of the nooks and crannies, and close it again. Rinse the front bumper areas in the same manner.
I washed my Black '08 DC today, and used two microfiber towels to dry the whole thing. No spotting or streaking.
I use the "drying with water" trick also, followed by a pass from a gas powered leaf blower. Leaves cars about 90% dry and forces the water out from the mirrors and door jambs. Its great for drying the wheel wells and rims too.
