This is a discussion thread titled "Problems with DuraGloss 652", within the Detailing forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
On the advice of the folks here, I procured a Porter Cable 7424 from autogeek along with the recommended DuraGloss 652 and 105. I used the 105 on my Tundra and was completely pleased.
Today, I wanted to try out the 652 on my '97 Mustang GT convertible. It's 11 years old and the paint, while in good shape for its age, needs some work.
So, I get out the 7424, a white foam polishing pad (figured I'd start with the least cut pad), and went to work. Sprayed the pad with pad lube, put a dime of 652 on the pad, spread it around, and began to polish.
Almost immediately, the 652 dried into a haze. What was worse, is that it wouldn't come off with anything but heavy strokes from a microfiber. I sprayed on AquaWax to clean it off and everything was fine.
Any reason why the 652 dried up immediately? In the autogeek buffing tutorials, it seems that they can polish gosh-darn near forever and the polishing stuff doesn't dry up.
It wasn't hot out today, but I was in the sun. Was that my mistake???
Honestly, I only recomend 652 for people that dont have access to better polishes. It's a great polish, dont get me wrong, but it's not the best and doesnt have the longest work time to begin with. Even though it wasent hot, it was still in the sun, that was probably your problem, i'd do it in the shade next time.
Again, if you ordered from autogeek, i'd think about trying a different polish. But if you cant, then Duragloss is the best for OTC lineups. #101 is a good cleaner if you are just trying to remove oxidation and crud FWIW.

What are you trying to do with the polish? If you are trying to remove oxidation, Klasse AIO or Duragloss Marine Polish. If you are trying to remove swirls, then something like Optimum Polish or Menzerna Intensive/Final polish will be needed.

Thankfully, the paint is a dark green color and has always been garaged even before it was mine. (It belonged to my Father - he bought it new) Oxidation isn't a problem.
It does have swirl marks and some surface defects - hood has some areas where bird doo-doo and bug guts have left marks. Nothing major, really.
But the painted plastic front bumper is really bad - bug guts have really played hades on the clear coat. Went after it with bug remover yesterday, washed it 4 or 5 times, and tried claying. Claying helped, but still you can see where the bug guts were. I'd like to try something a little more aggressive with the PC 7424 before I either decide to live with it or get it repainted...
The bumper you might have to live with. That is often a problem called bug-etching. Wherever the bug guts sat, the acid in thier bodies etched into the clear, causing it to crack in the shape of the bug spat. You can try wetsanding, but i'd just leave it alone or get it repainted.
If you have swirls, i'd just try some Optimum Polish, Poorboys SSR 2.5/SSR 1. Then top with your favorite sealant or wax

Bug etching thru the clear - that's exactly what's happened. Oh well, I'll live with it until it's time for a repaint. Will try the optimum polish on the swirls.
