This is a discussion thread titled "How do I clean stock aluminum wheels?", within the Detailing forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Would sanding the inside with fine grit sandpaper or fine steel wool ruin the wheel? Is there any other alternative to getting this stuff off? I've tried many different' cleaners and nothing works. Thanks
I meant wetsand. That is what I had to do to my aftermarket polished aluminum wheels to get them clean. I didn't know if I could do this to the stock wheels or not.

On my stock aluminum wheels - before I got my new wheels, I cleaned mine with - don't laugh - Formula 409 spray cleaner and an old tooth brush. Then I hosed them down.

If they are stock aluminum wheels, they should have a clearcoat. Remove embedded stuff the same way you would deal with them on paint. Some fine cut polish should get the dust out without damaging the clear.

I use the 3-1 Kit, Tire cleaner does not last very long and is expensive but if ya buy over 50 bucks ya get free shipping. I purchased more of the tire cleaner since it does not last like the shine & the rim spray. Keeps my Michelins really clean and melts brake dust really well and i have used the tire shine on the interior plastics and it really goes a long way! looks good on tires because it does not sling off or look like lacquered rubber and last longer than other products. I am basically still in the test mode for this product but so far it's doing ok! just 8 bucks a bottle is kinda expensive but it does get the brake dust off, no more red rubber after cleaning tire. tire shine goes pretty far and is not tacky looking!

I'll give the 409 and simple green a shot, but I tried the orange clean stuff before and that didn't work. Does anyone know if steel wool or wetsanding with 2000 paper would damage theses wheels?
