This is a discussion thread titled "Hard dried up bird doodoo", within the Detailing forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
What is the procedure for taking off bird droppings thats really dried and stuck to your paint? First I will try using my mitt to take it off, but usually it is just so dry and hard it wont come off. So I end up scratching it off with my nail... yeah sick lol. I know this can't be good so any other suggestions would be nice.

mix up some 50/50 water and baking soda and soak the doo in that. then rinse with a hose to remove big debris, and then finally wash with a mitt, just be sure not to leave any residue on the paint. birds can eat rocks and crap that will scratch the hell out of your paint.

I have some birds that are using my truck as target practice. There is no crap on the ground around it, but the truck gets nailed.

Watching Kansas at Allen Fieldhouse is the best place to watch a college basketball game. The atmosphere is perfect. No luxury seats, all bench seating, and every seat has a good view. The students sit close to the floor and everybody cheers from one hour before the game to the final seconds. By the end of the game, whether you are a Jayhawk fan or not, I promise you will be singing "Rock, Chalk, Jayhawk."

Happened to me once and I thought the little rats with wings were out to get me...then I realized I parked right under a telephone line that the birds would sit on...DOH!

we call those things SEAGULLS here. And for some reason tourists love to feed them by the hundreds. Oh I hate seagulls...
I sempathize with you on the doodoo. I agree with all the baking soda comments. Helps to neutralize the acid in their poo as well as loosen the stool from your hood!

Be sure that you rinse it off with a lot of water first before you start to wipe it at all. Bird need to eat sand/gravel to digest food and of course it's in their crap. (Worms do this too).
If you use synthetic wax, you'll find that it lasts a year and not very much sticks to it. This is preventive - too, you don't have to worry about acids and if someone should egg your car, no big deal there either. Wash when you get around to it vs. as soon as you find out.
If you don't use synthetic wax, then it's a good idea to neutralize the acids - just about any household cleaner that is amonia base will do. Rinse off as much as you can with water, soak a sponge with 409, simple green, etc and lay it on the rest of the crap to soak in. 15 minutes later - blast it off with water. You shouldn't have to scrape anything. Soaking is the best way - it WILL get so soft it just washes off with a blast of water.
But if you're not sure on what's on the paint, then neutralize the crap. The baking soda is a good idea if you make a paste. Keeping it wet with plain water for 15 minutes will soften it enough - so will parking it in a good rainstorm and washing with a hose before it dries again.
Putting a blob of polish on it and wiping it off after 15 minutes before it dries will work too. (Of course you're not doing any of this out in the sun!!!)
