DetailingGeneral discussion forum for detailing your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "A LOT of Swirls marks", within the Detailing forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I just got my 07 Tundra back yesterday. To make a long story short... Dealer put a dent in my truck, a body shop fixed it. The part they fixed was my bedside taking the dent out, blended some paint in, and put a new clear coat on the whole bed side. My question is how come the newly fixed area has swirl marks of a 10 year old car. I read the detail sticky, but what is good polish to get rid of them without using a porter cable and that is locally found at wal mart or something? (i have meguiars sratchX, but that that dosen't seem to work to well, swirls just come back after the next wash.)
If you look at the pic where the sun hits the paint the swirls come out, thats how it is on the whole bedside...
Looks a lot worse in person.

By hand you arent going to do much better than Scratch-X. Maybe try some mothers power polish.
IMO, i'd take it back to them, make them pay for a detailer to fix it. I hate body shops for doing that, but on the other hand, they send me a ton of buisness b/c of it

I find it really HARD to trust people these days... I would pay for a detailer to take all the swirls out on my truck, but again the trusting part of it is hard. Like they would say oh yeah we can take em out! then they end up making it worse or just hiding it. Dam I wish you worked in California lol. It's time to expand your business!

short of wet sanding the clear coat then compound> Hand Glaze then polish...
Yu never get rid of swirls...NEVER. It is damage that is irreversaible.
Yu can only conceal it only to find it return at some point.
Just return it to the Body shop. They are responsible. Yu are not satisfied.
\
\That simple.
??????.......wet sanding to remove simple micro marring? That quarter panel could be fixed in about 30 minutes with just a PC, and it'd look better than the day he bought it.

Those swirls will come out very easily, dont lose any sleep over it. If that passed the quality inspector's test before it left the body shop, you might want to consider another place to have it fixed. Ask the body shop to pay for a professional detailer to polish that out. Or maybe at least split the cost with you.
Again, that can be fixed by any pro detailer. Shop around and dont be shy about asking for references. Most good detailers keep a good list of clients and a fat photo album
That is completely false. Swirls are very easy to remove and keep off with proper washing.
I dont know where you get your info. And I would never return it to the body shop, they may take out the swirls, but put in buffer trails/holograms.
Hey Brandon,
Sorry to go off John's topic, but good luck with the gig tomorrow. Sounds like alot of fun, wish I were closer. Get them boys out of the Wal-Mart isles.

Oh, we had to reschedule it b/c of lack of interest for this weekend. But when it does come around, we gonna get them out of the Wal-Mart isle.

I bought the Turtle wax polish from wal mart for like 5 bucks, just did my hood. Oh boy oh boy is it tough to buff off... Especially in the dark lol, ended up just QD the rest off and then a coat of wax. Will have to see how it came out tomorrow.
Oh yeah I went back to the body shop and told em about the swirls, the guy was like oh yeah we machine polished it, just wash your car and all of it will be gone. And he said he can wipe it down with a terry cloth real quick. I was like uhm no, thats more swirls if your not going to properly wash it first. Then I just left.. That shows how much they know about polishing and detailing. And them polishing is just swirls galore, i don't get why they polish the repaired area if they're gonna mess it up.
And for the complimentary wash it seems like they just get a dirty sponge and start wiping it down without rinsing the truck first, and imagine how many cars they wash a day using that same method and sponge. Also looks like when they dry it, they just get a dirty rag and wipe it down not even drying it completely.

You might want to return that Turtle Wax polish, or consider using it as a door stop, thats about all its good for. If its in your budget, nows the perfect time to invest in a PC and some pads. You can set yourself up for about $200 and you'd have those swirls fixed and the truck looking perfect in one weekend.
It sounds like going back to the body shop is a lost cause..... sorry to hear that. A new PC or hiring a detailer sounds like your best bet. Polishing by hand simply wont get you the results that a PC would. All you'll get out of it is a sore elbow. But for the price you'd pay for a pro to do it right, you can buy your own PC and have it forever. Its well worth the money.
Good luck!
By the way, I love those TRD dual tips! They look great.
I would invest in one, but they seem like if you don't use it the correct way the swirls gets worse? I'll have to try it out in the near future... thx about the trd exhaust jumbo, those getting installed is what started this whole mess lol.

Take it to service writer and tell him the repair is unaceptable and let them scratch their heads, do this 3 times because District rep will get involved once it comes back for the 3rd time and then talk to Dealership PR Rep and ask them do i have to file complaint with corporate or will yall let me take it to a body shop to get it fixed correct! That's when Toyota Rep will get involved but probably will not go that far but sometimes they are hard headed! Good luck and keep on them or they will blow you off!
