This is a discussion thread titled "Holy Clay Bar Batman!!", within the Detailing forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Clay barred my wifes ride today for the first time ever.....and WOW! i cant stop touching it. hahaha she might clay bar herself. i wouldnt post it here...but since my toy is in the back ground i thought it be ok. hahaha
I have heard about the clay bar...is it time consuming, costly, or hard to do?
Car looks great...have ya raced your wife yet?
she only has 265 horses. i would only let her win so i didnt have to sleep on the couch...rofl!
I bought the meguiars one from walmart...it was like 14 bux for the kit. all i really needed was the clay since i already had everything that came with the kit. but its really easy to do. do one panel at a time...soak it with the spray they give ya and slide the clay back and forth and then dry it with the microfiber they give ya once its really smooth and you cant feel anymore bumps. i bought her car brand new in 2003 and its never been done until today. and man...it feels better than the day i bought it. the clay gets gross . the gunk that came off looked yellow and orange like nicotine. . but its just like glass now.
it took me prolly 45 minutes to an hour (im a perfectionist). its effortless.
Sweet...good idea to wash it real good first? I imagine my Truck will take a little longer...how bout the topper, think it would be ok to use on there too?

im sure it works well on any painted surface. wash it really good and dry it. after that use the "spray lube" which is just quik detailer and rub the clay on. make sure the clay is always on a nice wet surface or it will leave smudges.
check this out. they say if you drop it throw it away.
yup! i have tons of their gold class wax but wanted to try something new so i bought the 3M pro finish wax... i wanted to a synthetic wax and believe it is. if it isnt someone correct me.
Clay is really easy to do. You can definitely tell the difference when the contaminants have been removed. The clay will start gliding over the surface like on a Teflon surface.
I usually clay a car right after I buy it, and wash it with Dawn liquid first to remove any previous wax type buildup. After the clay, I usually put on at least two coats of Zaino. There are many other good products out there, but Zaino has lasted longer and looks better than anything else I tried.
That being said, my truck came with the BS $400 wax-job from Toyota as an option. At least it does appear that they really did polish it though, as there was no reason to clay it - very unusual. Every new car I've had since finding out about the clay has needed it. And just for grins, I tried Meguiar's NXT 2.0 on the Tundra. Easy to apply, looks very good - we'll just have to see how long it lasts compared to Zaino.
To save yourself a step, wash it first, then while you have the bucket and shampoo out, clay it and use the shampoo as your lube. That will save you in the long run from having to buy more detail spray over and aver again.
Do one panel at a time and rub the clay lightly in the direction that the wind would flow over that panel if the car were moving. Light pressure is all thats needed. Keep a small sandwich baggie handy and use it to help you test the panels after youve clayed. Put your hand in the baggie and rub it across the panel while its still wet. The baggie will magnify the sensation in your finger tips and you'll be able to feel every little bump and imperfection. Baggie test until you are satisfied the panel is perfect.
Dont use the whole bar at once. Cut it into small pieces and use that piece to do the car. Roll and knead it often to expose a fresh clean side. If you drop your piece........ throw it out and grab a new one.
The clay will remove all waxes so be sure to wax afterwards.
