Waxing wont restore your shine, only protect it. You'll need to polish the paint to bring back the shine and depth. Do you have a PC and some pads? If not now would be a great time to invest in some. If not it'd probably be a good idea to take it to a professional detailer and see what they can do.

If you have a PC and pads, then you're halfway there. It is very possible and quite common for neglected paint to lose it's clear coat. I see it everyday here in Florida.

If your clear is already thinning out then I would start with the least aggressive polish and work up from there if necessary. Klasse AIO and a white pad is a good starting point. AIO is a chemical cleaner and contains no abrasives. Work it in one half panel at a time with a white pad and PC on 4 until you're satisfied with your results. Wipe off and repeat with the entire truck.

If AIO won't cut it, then step up to a mildly aggressive polish like Einszettes Paint Polish (green can). Use that again with a white pad and PC on 4. If still no luck go to an orange pad and PC on 5.

If the clear is as bad as you're describing then start with the least aggressive polish so as not to cause further damage.

Results for Paint Care:Paint Prep

I would try Prima Swirl, it works great with an orange pad, or for less cutting power it works well with a white pad. Follow with Prima Finish with a white pad and then top with your favorite sealant.

Prima is a higher end boutique product, very good results and very easy to work with. Klasse AIO is also a good one step, but lacks real cutting power.
