DetailingGeneral discussion forum for detailing your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Teflon Paint Protection/Sealant", within the Detailing forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Anyone heard about Teflon Paint Sealant or have it applied to any of their cars or trucks?
My neighbors black Grand Cherokee always looks REALLY good and when I asked him how he keeps it clean, he said he just washes it off with water (no soap) about once a week. No waxing, no soap, no nothing!
What the heck? Is this stuff for real?
Andy

WOW...almost looks too good to be true! Since I posted about this last, I talked to my neighboor about his sealant. He said it came with his truck and he really likes it. Since then, I have also noticed a couple of new 4Runners at the Toyota dealer with a Teflon Sealant on them. They charge $595 for it though!!! OUCH! I don't know if that is aftermarket sealant and the dealer marks it up or what, but I highly doubt they come from the factory like that.
Anyway, thanks a lot for the info!
Andy

OK--did the impulse buy and bought the stuff mentioned a few posts before. Just went to their website and used paypal. I'm going to clay bar the paint and apply the "5 Star Shine" stuff and will post results.
I have not applied it yet. Hopefully in about a week All my friends have laughed at me for paying 75$ for the product, but I can't find it anywhere else. Have not looked that hard though.
I'm anxious to hear how it turns out too. Heck, the dealers are adding at least $500 to the price of a new car for the same thing. If it works, I'd say you got away pretty cheap!!!

I'm sorry--I should of posted this earlier. I returned the stuff last week. I didn't trust it after all. I still think it may work but figured why chance it.
Bobbit, sounds like you gave the autopia-carport.com thread a good read? I did, and it seems like all the detailing "buffs" (no pun intended) don't trust the stuff either.

hey guys, it's been a while since i've checked out the boards but this was a thread i remembered and wanted to check back to see what the result of the 5 star shine test was.... i am dissapointed to find out that there was no test conducted, but if there was reason to truly doubt the product, you get no blame from me. i am curious however to find out what it was that dissuaded you from trying the 5 star shine.
i tried following that link to the autopia-carport.com site, but it seems to not exist, or else i am having serious connection problems. could someone fill me in on what was on that site? i would love some information because i was fully intending on trying this product.

It's not you. Another dot-com is dot-gone. It's really unfortunate when fansites bite the dust. That domain now directs to a generic hosting page with ad links.

Whether to doubt the product or not... I certainly do not like their website.
#1 - First thing is a popup "OK Cancel". I hate popups.
#2 - The site is formatted like a typical snake-oil infomercial. References to magical technologies like a special wash opening pores and placing an ionic charge on the paint. Of course, they use the military as a major reference... one which cannot be easily verified.
#3 - When closing the site, there's ANOTHER popup. I hate popups.
Remember the Autofom infomercials where they torch the hood of the Mustang? I used some of that stuff on my Escort. The stuff was like spreading on an epoxy coating. It ruined the finish and would have had to be sanded off... the whole car would have had to have been stripped if I had wanted to repaint it... and that wouldn't have taken care of the stuff that got onto the plastic trim pieces.
The product may be okay, but I don't care for the messenger.
