Question Remote Car Starter Question??????

I have an '02 Tundra TRD and FREAKING love it!!!

I just got a question..I just got a remote starter installed, which is the greatest thing, and I had them wire my door locks to it. Now everything works fine, but the system doesn't chirp when it locks and unlocks. It still does when I use my toyota controller. Anyone else have this problem, and if so, is there a fix for this? I called the installer and he said it won't becuase its not connected to the computer. Im sure its BS but please let me know...its not critical but I've been so use to it.

What type of remote start and what do you mean "I had them wire my door locks to it"?

Do you now have 2 key fobs, one the OEM one for keyless entry and one for the remote start that also allows door lock & unlock?

Default re: remote starter

Its the AutoCommand made by Design Tech unit. It comes with the option of having the doorlocks and starter unit all in one. So i had them wire it so that everything in on one controller. This way I don't have two controllers, one for the starter, and the other OEM controller for the locks. No when I use the Autocommand contrller, it unlocks and locks but doesn't chirp. But when I tested it with the OEM controller, it still chirps. My question is, is ther anyway to get the chirp back with the Autocommand controller. The guys who installed it said that the reason it doesn't chirp is because its not connected to the computer so it won't chirp. Does this make it clear?

Yes - they wired it directly to the lock/unlock motor in the door. The OEM systems do no have the capability of being connected to by another system.

so in other words...I won't have the chirp, or there isn't any way of connecting it?

You won't have the "chirp" and there is no way to integrate the remote start to the factory keyless.

If you MUST have the "chirp" and a single key fob, replace the OEM keyless entry with a keyless entry or alarm system that will integrate with your remote start or a combination alarm/remote start. Then you can have a single key fob with the "chirp".

Glen,

I just got off the phone with Toyota of Nashua and they said they can install a remote starter that will integrate with the factory alarm. They also said it is a Pursuit brand, which an internet search reveals to be manufactured by Audiovox...

Of course, at $379 I'm not about to go get one when I can get the Viper from Tweeter for $250 (after negotiating). I'll just need to get down to the dealer and find out 'how' they wire it to integrate with the factory alarm...

Has anyone else to this day successfully integrated the factory alarm with a remote starter? I don't understand why we should pay for another alarm when we already have one...

Default Factory Alarm?

My Taco didn't come with a factory alarm. Now I am glad that it did not.
An aftermarket total system is the best way to go. When you try to integrate into a preexisting alarm with a system that is not designed for that purpose you are increasing your chances for problems (as your situation shows).

The real cost of an alarm or keyless entry is not the hardware, it is the installation. I just installed one, and I discovered shops who would put it in for $200 bucks. Which was cheaper than their cost to install one that I would have purchased through them.

Another point to consider is that a "factory" alarm is manufactured by an aftermarket company. The product usually ends up being a lower end unit anyway and generally inferior to just about anything you would purchase later.

Good luck on getting yours like you want it.

most remote start systems have an "activation input" which can be with to the positve lock motor wire. not all but some, then locking the doors twice from the factory alarm remote will activate the remote start. so in a round about way its intergrated, this would keep his chirp and would run everything from one remote (factory). The downside is more often then not the aftermarket remote will have a better range. its a give and take. an other option would be to wire an alarm siren to the horn honk output off the remote start. the chirp won't be the same tone as the toyota one but it would chirp, when and how depends on each brand of remote start, or if possible. either option the installer is justified in charging for the extra labor. if money wasn't an option, you could pay the shops hourly rate to find the factory siren and try to wire directly, i'm not 100% sure its possible, i never look to see when i did mine.
