Re: DIY: TruSpeed Install Guide for 2005 Tundra, 4WD
The install is all done and it's running like a champ. Tundradrenalin's 180 minute time frame is pretty much dead on. It took me just over 3 hours and I was taking my time making sure not to screw anything up.
A huge thank you goes out to mustang67408 for his help with getting the vehicle-specific wiring info.
I took a few loops around the highway and dialed it in a few times using a GPS and it's almost perfect. Now I have to unlearn 4 years of habit of adding 4 mph to my speedo when I'm driving.
On the 2001, everything Tundradrenalin listed up top is basically identical except my combination meter had 4 plugs instead of the 2 that his 2005 showed in the pics and of course the wiring colors are different. My soldering skills need some work, but it came out pretty well. I already had a good set of switched 12v and ground cables lying around tucked behind a cover where I had a CB attached, but since I found that yelling out the window was equally as effective as keying up, I pulled it out months ago, so I didn't need to find a new 12v source.

Nice TEAMWORK EVERYONE!!!!
IMJIN: Ever thought about going to HAM RADIO? 100% more effective than CB. Lots more power and it can be set up simple for approx the same costs as a CB.

Funny you should mention that... I'm going for my Technicians license sometime this year. I've been studying the ARRL license manual for the last few weeks and some of it is starting to come back slowly.

Here are a couple of free places to start taking tests for practice. What one site test doesnt ask, the other site more than covers.
I am going after my Genral License later this year.
GOOD LUCK
Sorry, back to topic.....

Re: DIY: TruSpeed Install Guide for 2005 Tundra, 4WD
I just installed my truespeed on my 05 Dcab last night. Thanks to Tundradrenalin for the great write up...I didn't even use the truspeed instructions. Also thans to mustang for answering all of my questions in another thread.
The only thing I did different was to use the supplied mini fuse tap to get power from the fusebox instead of splicing another wire.

The instructions shown here illustrates how you can tie into the appropriate wires (which I would guess would be the same wire) up by the combination meter behind the dash.
So, my first question is, the small blue box in the illustration above labeled "V2 Vehicle Speed Sensor (Combination Meter)" actually back at the trasfer case? Is there then no other connections or sensors tied into this wire between the speed sensor and the combination meter behind the dash? If this is the case then this seems to be a much better location to tie into the wires then in an area outside the cab more exposed to the elements.
Really, what I am asking is does the tie-in location described in these instructions allow the TruSpeed Recalibrator to correct not just the speedometer, but also the odometer, fuel delivery system, ABS function, etc.?
Thanks so much for any clarification.
And yes, well done on the instructions

Oh, and I forgot, what is the single yellow wire shown leaving the speed sensor as shown in the illustration?

Hi Mark,
I didn't end up using that schematic, rather I cheated and emailed Mustang67408 for the right wire to splice into. I've seen a few installs done where they mounted it up under the vehicle and tied into the sensor cable near the transfer case, but it's much easier to just solder it inline with the speedo sensor cable attached to your gauge cluster. We'd need to find the correct cable that's specific to your 2004 model to splice into. The green & yellow wires from the Truspeed splice into your speedo cable, then the red is a hot 12v and the black goes to a good ground. I know the wiring harness on my 2001 looks a lot different than the later models. Basically, you cut your sensor wire, then solder the yellow Truspeed wire to one end of the cut, followed by soldering the green Truspeed wire to the other end of the cut.
From using it these last couple of months, I'm fairly certain that it not only corrects the speedo, but also the odometer, trip meters and gets the transmission back to where it was shifting in the right spots again. All the device is basically doing is allowing the factory speed signal to pass through it, where it adds to or takes away from the signal that reaches the ECU, based on the calibration screws you set for your particular setup. It's not really adjusting anything other than the speed signal, but that speed signal is the starting point for things to get out of whack with larger tires and/or different gearing from the factory setup.
Prior to the install, my tranny would always seem like it was staying in the lower gears longer than it used to (before larger tires were installed). After the install, I could tell immediately (from the seat of your pants gauge) that it was shifting differently, more like it used to prior to larger tires.

Perfect! Thanks! Now I just need to make sure I find the right wire. Anyone have a wiring diagram for an '04 with a 3.4L V6, access cab, and manual tranny???
