Default Carputers

Anyone have experience setting up their rig with a Car Computer (Carputer)?

I did a search, but didn't quite find what I was looking for. Most of the systems seem to have been built piecemeal from parts gathered computer stores, audio stores, ebay, etc.

Does anyone make an all-in-one complete Carputer kit? I'd want something with an In-dash 7-inch monitor. The PC box itself could be in-dash also, or under-the-seat.

I got my carcomputer from mo-co-so.com I suggest that you could probably piece together a better computer via newegg or ebay...mp3car.com has a ton of great info...

all in all I love it...I have movies for my daughter, a ton of storage for my mp3s, GPS and the internet at my finger tips via bluetooth serial connection...

I've toyed with the idea as well. The mp3car.com site seems to have the most info of any place I have looked. They advertise a few off the shelf systems, but its still something that you will have to build and configure to get running. Makes me wonder why somebody doesn't come out with a unit that will fit in a double din hole, support all the major audio functions, GPS, rear view video, wi fi to network at home, big hard drive and have an os that gives you some capabilities to customize. It wouldn't take that much to take one of the higher end in dash gps units like the pioneer or eclipse and at least give them the wi-fi, storage and networking functions. That would be most of what people would want in a carpc anyway.

I'm planning on buying a mac mini off of ebay (intel with front row) and putting it in the center console. They buying a video module from coastaletech.com to hook it up too my Toyota Navigation unit. You can buy special power supplies for the mini, no inverter required, it sends CLEAN power to the mini, and automatically puts the mini to sleep when the car is turned off.

I'm thinking of taking it a step further and sync the mini wirelessly with my MBP in the house. Park the truck in the driveway and wirelessly sync music, movies, and tv shows

The way I would use it is mainly as an entertainment center. No other features since I already have navigation and the radio in my headunit. If I wanted to I could surf the internet, but that's why I have my iphone.

I am re-organizing my pictures, please PM me if you find dead pictures and I'll fix it. Also, I don't have many pics in my account here, best place to view my truck is on photobucket: Here is my photobucket account: LINK

I hand built a carputer in my last truck (a Nissan Frontier) mainly for MP3 playback. There wasn't many storage options at the time so I decided that was the way I would go.

Now though, I've got all the functions I had with the carputer (and more) with off-the-shelf parts using an 80G ipod for storage with a digital interface to the alpine nav screen. Similar cost to the last project but a whole lot less time

i am actually building a unit right now. voom2case via m10000 mobo dvd burner lilliput screen. i was thinking of mounting it in the upper glove box and tying into my jvc dvd player. that would be easyest. my buds want me to go nuts. i need an amp that has a low (less than 1volt) rca input 4 channel of course. then i need to custom mold in the screen into my metra adapter. run all new speaker wires buy a sirius or xm adapter
. by the time i make it this far $$$$$ lol

if i do the hard way im gonna invest in a good front end (interface programm)
most of the free ones do not do that great of a job integrating all i want it to do. someone prove me wrong!
also i seen this alarm/ relay blutooth interface where you can controll everything from alarm to remote start to window functions etc with a bluetooth cell pda and of course with the computer.
well it would be nice if someone else jumped into this with me so we can compare notes.

just for the heck of it i posted my hardware on craigslist to see if anyone would bite. so i may upgrade to a nicer system if i sell it. but i am deff gonna put one in my truck just dont know how im gonna mount it
