This is a discussion thread titled "Factory Battery...how long do they last?", within the Electrical & Computer Systems forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
My 2006 DC is only a couple years old and my battery was dead today. The truck did sit for about 2 weeks and I'm wondering if that did it?? Any suggestions?

A normal automotive battery should give you about 4 to 5 years of service ( reasonable quality ones). Your battery should not have died so quickly ( 2 weeks ) under normal conditions. Could you have left on an interior light or something like that ? Or do you have some accesories that do not switch off with the key ?
The drain from the ECM is not enough to kill off a battery for quite a long time. What you can do is charge it up and take it to a shop and have a load- test done on it, this can give an indication of a weak battery. Most batteries have a pro-rated warranty that may help cover you if the battery shows up to be bad.
Nope! No interior lights left on by accident or anything else. I did have a lil bit of corosion on the negative battery terminal i'll have to clean up.

Try charging it and cleaning like previously stated. My 05 sat for two weeks after surgery and I thought it wouldn't crank she fired right up.Still running strong 3years 9 days and about 32k miles.Corrosion makes for high resistance. It will probably run fine after cleaning the terminal and charging.
Just picked up my battery charger from the storage. Hooked the battery up and immediately it was reading less than 25% charged. Set the charger to 2amp and it took about 3 1/2 hours to reach 100%. Will reinstall the battery tomorrow since it's already dark outside.
Worst case scenario you guys say it does it again. Defective battery or is it just not able to hold a charge anymore? Possible slow discharge in my wiring somewhere? I am running an aftermarket system with 2 amps.
I know when I use to work at Sears Automotive the battery tech would run a systems charge test and they can tell if there's a slight drain in the electrical system somewhere but can't pin point exactly where?

To pin point drain you can get a meter and check after turning off truck and disconnect things one at a time until you figure out what is draining your battery.Depending on how many watts you are cranking you may need to invest in an optimum or some kind of deep cycle battery or second battery set up.The system could be not letting your battery fully charge because if the alternator can't supply the amps you need it will pull from your battery which over time will drain it because it will not fully charge.
Just replaced mine last month after 5 years and 1 month of service
