This is a discussion thread titled "Disconnect ground before float charging ???", within the Electrical & Computer Systems forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
My 06 Tundra is used infrequently so I want to put a float charger on the battery to maintain it.
The user's manual states "If recharging with the battery installed on the vehicle, be sure to disconnect the ground cable.". Anybody know if this requirement applies to a float charge???
This requires additional work to drive the truck in addition to loosing the computer and radio settings.

I've left a Battery Tender charger hooked up for several weeks on both my Tundra and Camry when we've been away. I haven't experienced any problems doing it.

If a combo of all these whizz bangs met their claims you'd have to syphon gas out of your tank every second day and sell the excess horsepower on the third????
Did you remove the negative ground cable from the battery? The manual said to do this when charging the battery. Which I believe refer to charging a dead battery which require much higher ampage than a trickle charger.

I left everything connected. I bought the Battery Tender 20 years ago to maintain the batteries in my Honda and Kawasaki road bikes. Now it's primary use is to maintain the Optima battery in my Torino every winter. I doubt the low amperage input from a maintenance charger would affect anything in our Tundras. The Battery Tender charger is regulated and only charges when necessary
