Electrical & Computer SystemsDetails discussions regarding electrical components, wiring, all lighting, wire harnesses and HID conversion for your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Trailer brake controller wiring", within the Electrical & Computer Systems forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I have the stock wiring harness for a 2003 Toyota Tundra for the brake controller. I need to know which wires do what (ie. ground, brake switch, battery, etc.)
NOTE: The colors are NOT the same for the truck and the brake controller. I removed a Teknosha Prodigy from the Acura MDX which we won't be using for towing any more and soldered the appropriate wires from the Tundra harness plug to the Tekonsha plug. One of the wires doesn't get used. (Brown, I think I remember). White goes both to trailer brakes and to a good ground point (e.g. behind the driver's side kick plate). Black is fused power to the brake controller. Red is brakelight input and blue is output to the trailer connector.
Good luck. Oh, if it isn't a Tekonsha, you better look for the website of your brake controller. The colors for the Toyota side are on the little piece of paper which was in the bag the Toyota harness came in. Or, you can buy a direct plug-n-play harness, but I was too impatient

By the way, there's a feature on Tundrasolutions called "Search" and by typing "Wiring Brake Controller" I got the following hits. Some of these may be relevant.
Ok. i got the color code for the controller. Now i need to know what wire dose what on the harness that came in the glove box. I dont have the little paper that came with it. if someone could just type the info in i would love it. thanks.
I lost my little piece of paper, so I looked under my dash and saw what was wired to what.
White to white and to ground.
Big Red from truck plug goes to Blue on Brake Controller - this is output to trailer
Black w/ red tracer from truck goes to Black on Brake Controller - this is power from the truck
Little Green from from truck plug goes to Red on Brake Controller this is from your truck brakes when you step on them.
Good Luck!
