Testing an AVIC Z1/Z3

I have a new hard drive with a new image that I would like to install in my AVIC. Once I have this hard drive installed how do I test the unit without having to put it in the vehicle yet? I figured I could hook it up to a battery charger to allow the unit to turn on and see if the hard drive boots up and the dvd player and other things work properly. Does that sound right? If so, which wires do I connect to the charger? If not....please advise!!
