Default 2000 Tundra Horn Problem

I have a horn that works intermittently and I have no idea what might be causing it. I took the steering column apart according to a Haynes manual and cleaned the contacts that are involved with the horn. It worked great but unfortunately it was during the time that the horn seemed to be working well, which does occur.

It has nothing to do with wet versus dry conditions, e.g. rain etc. Today as a matter of discussion.. it was working then I tried it 10 minutes later with no luck. We were driving on a trip 75 miles each way and it never worked again during the trip at all.

I have not been able to coorelate when it does or doesnt work to any certain condition because it literallly can work and then not work within the span of minutes. There are two horns under the hood as a stock design so I do not believe it is either of those.

Any ideas would be most appreciated.

Thanks,
Keith

Have you inspected the horns themselves under the hood. They could be going bad or a loose connection. They are located at top of the radiator support. Try swapping them out with some Hella's (deep or high tone or 1 of each).

Are both of the horns having problems or just one? Both horns are on the same circuit so if both are dropping out, it could be the horn switch in your steering wheel, the horn relay, or the wiring. If only one horn drops out, it would probably the horn itself or a loose connection to that individual horn.

I found a common element that Im pretty sure is the source of the problem. Its the remote access/security system. The system causes the horn to chirp when arming/disarming. When the horn isnt working via the steering column if I hit the remote access it chirps as it should everytime, then the horn will work for some time.

The issue is whether this can be 'fixed' without having to replace the remote system. However not having a functional horn is a bigger issue.

Any advice would be appreciated.

IF the wiring for your year model is the same as my 03, the wire going from the horn switch to the integration relay is green with a red stripe and goes to pin 12 of the integration relay (located with the interior fuse panel). If you can get to that wire, you can see if the signal is grounded each time you push the horn switch.
