This is a discussion thread titled "Advice for Installing a Big-A Air Horn", within the Electrical & Computer Systems forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Hey all. I have a spare horn layin around the shop. Its about 2 feet long and about 8 inches by 6 inches at the outlet. It used to be on a Mack truck. Anywho, i'm going to install it on my truck, somewhere under the hood, or around the frame undercarriage somewhere, but i need to know what i'll need. I know i'll need a compressor, a tank, and some hose, as well as an electronic solinoid release. I am planning to put the switch where the extra fog-light switch can go, next to the existing fog light switch. Also, i need to know what kind of electronic adjustments i need to do, like running a wire to the battery or to some fuses or somthing. Any help/suggestions would be much appreciated.
I have wanted to put one of those big-rig air horns on all my trucks over the years. BUT they require an engine-driven compressor with a high PSI output. The reason you see them on diesel trucks is they already have a large air pump for other purposes.
So I have Pep Boy's specials made in Italy that have an electric compressor. The sound is not the deep sound of a big rig but it's loud, anyway.
The JC Whiney catalog has quite a large selection of horns ... check them out!
Now of course, if you find away to run those big horns on your truck, please post it. I love the sound.

well i was going to get one of those speed-bag compressors that they use on trucks that are equipped with air-bag-suspensions. you can mount them under your truck, and connect them to a power supply and they air up a big tank in a jiffy. Thanks for your suggestions.
Thanks for your suggestion! The air bag compressor would work great. The car magazines are full of them.
Now, lets see ....... mount the pump under the truck, run power direct from the battery, use copper hard air lines, mount the horn under the hood ..... Ah ... a new project!

yea i did a dry-fit of the horn today. I was looking under my truck for a place to put the tank, and compressor. The only spot i could find was directly under the passenger side, inside the frame-rail. the compressor would go in front of the tank, after one of the crossmembers. I was thinking on what type of line to use, and you gave me a lightbulb. Copper. You won'n have to worry about the exhaust/engine heat melting the rubber, and they wont flex, providing solid blasts. I found a spot to fit the horn too. Its actually about a 3.5" x 6" at the outlet, and about 2 feet long. It barely fits in front of the radiator, behind the bumper. I'd have to fab up some mounting brackets though. I was thinking i could just use self-tapping screws and attatch it to the lower part of the header panel. Make the electric switch right there by the foglight switch, and your done! I'm going to go shopping for compressors and an air-tank soon at some local custom shops. I'll let you know what i come up with. Maybe you and I could work on this together, trading ideas/techniques/failures. Later.
You have GOT to check this out. www.airhorns.com/truck.htm
I'm drooling over the possibilities with this web page. Be sure to check out "train horn"...How cool would that be...
Oh. My horn is like the rectangular horn at the bottom of the "truck" page.
