This is a discussion thread titled "To those looking for a new battery", within the Electrical & Computer Systems forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I have a 2000 V8 model and my battery was getting a little long in the tooth. I had accidentally drained it one time when I left the dome light on and thereafter it was not spinning the starter as briskly. So......did some research and came across the Exide Orbital which uses similar technology to the Optima battery. Sam's club carries the Exide Orbital in a larger 770 CCA called the XLT. $99 and they dont require a core donation (I will probably keep the old battery as a back up for jumping the lawnmower, etc). The battery fit right in without needing any cable mods and all I had to do was bend the battery hold down bracket a bit and its fits perfect. Also I have never heard the starter spin so quickly.
I could not find the optima reversed poles for less than 130. I could find the nonreversed poles for 110 in the optima but then I would have the hassle of modifying the cables.
The Exide comes with a 3 year free replacement and 84 month pro-rated warranty.
I have the same battery in my 86 Mustang GT and I have drained it a few times but it always comes back to full charge. I know everyone touts the Optima but so far the Exide has performed flawless.

I might need one of those. My 6 month old tundra is having trouble starting in this 35 degree weather. Damn POS "all weather" package battery. Go toyota.
Well, Exide has caught up with Optima. The Spiral Core/Gel Cell technology
is the only thing I'll put in my cars/truck. Thanks for the info. Optima has had a monopoly and has a high price. It's good to know I can go to Costco
(my favorite store) and get a high-tech battery for a decent price.
I've got (2) old riding lawnmowers that were requiring new batteries about every 2 years. Once I paid as high as $36 for one, and it only lasted a season or two. I bought (2) new Exide batteries at Schucks for something like $12.95 after rebate, and they have been in service for nearly 5 years now and still going. I think they are very good, considering the low price. These were just their standard lead-acid battery technology.
