I hate getting the run around in a shop, if they dont carry it, they totally disown it. So whats the consensus, I am thinking about the higher end clifford or viper, the 1 with the remote start and pager. I know one member has the viper, can i get some additional feedback? Also, whats a reasonalble install price, a shop quoted me $600! Also, a member previously had his starter fry due to a remote start malfunction, will the shop that did the intall warrenty this? Thanks a lot guys
You can activate the already installed RS 3200 factory security system for free, add a Radio Shack LED for $5.00 or get the factory kit that includes the LED and a glass breakage sensor for about $100 on ebay (the one your dealer tries to sell for $400).
This works if the keyless entry package is already installed on the vehicle. Search 'RS 3200' on TS for details. No remote start or paging, however.
I bought the kit on ebay and installed it myself in less than an hour with the detailed photos available in the 'Garage' section of the forum.

$600 sounds high. I just had the Viper 690XV installed this past weekend. I wasn't finding any do-it-yourself alarm upgrade info for my DC 2004, and I liked the idea of having a paging system that could provide detailed status of the vehicle. I decided I did not need remote start which is why I went with the 690 versus the 790(http://www.directed.com/security/viper/default.asp).
I think I got a great deal on the unit @ $225 after checking prices on the web. They charged another $100 for the install of the alarm alone. I then added a couple of extras which bumped me up a some. I added the Automatic Window Roll-up Module and a Proximity Sensor.
So far it is working great. Love the window module which automatically closes the windows when you set the alarm(I am getting forgetful in my old age), and allows you to lower them in increments after the alarm has been set to provide ventilation on those hot days. I only had them install one window module which runs the two front, but I intend to have them install another one for the rear window.
I purchased the Proximity Sensor to keep the Looky-Lou's away. I cannot believe how many times I have walked up to my truck to find people peering into it. Since I intend to update the sound system at some point, I thought it might be a useful feature. The dealer has programmed the field very tight to the truck, so it only starts to chirp when someone is right up close to it.
I would be careful in choosing the right shop to do the install, and remember that Directed Electronics makes most of these alarms, just under different monikers(Clifford, Python, Viper, etc.....). So if you go to a Viper dealer and the qoute is kind of high, try a Clifford dealers' install quote on a unit with the same features, it is really the same unit. (Clifford, Python, Viper, etc.....)
Good Luck..........

Nice write-up! I've got the 791XV responder and absolutely love it. The total price was around $800: remote start, alarm, dome light and cargo light supervision, headlight supervision solid not blinking, window roll/up down. Also, as TundraMan2004 said, all DEI alarms are pretty much the same. Except, they'll charge you more for Clifford. Viper is the way to go though.

So have you guys with the responders ever actually been paged if your car alarm goes off? Can you start it inside of a building?
Yes and yes. I was at a friend of mine's house one time and more people were coming over. All of a sudden I hear some beeping and feel the thing vibrating inside my pocket. Turns out someone had bumped up against the truck. It can start and get signals from reallllly far away though (starts easily from inside most houses). Sometime I'll go get a picture of how far it can receive signals from, even with other cars around.

The best alarms are sold at electronics stores. Dealers like Bob Baker Toyota are a complete rip off for alarms. You can get an alarm with a remote start and pager cheaper at an electrons store than at a dealership in many cases.
