Default Tundra Daytime Running Lights

When getting insurance quotes all companies ask if these are present. I always just assumed so on a 03 truck. But I ran inside the other day (truck on) and noticed there were no lights on. Is it only if you run the regular lights during the day at full regular power you have daytime running lights. I have kept them on during the day and notice they turn off when you open the door, but am I missing something.

Thanks

I would guess you dont have DRL's. Mine come on immediately when the truck is started UNLESS the parking brake is on. Doesnt matter if the light switch is on or not, that just controls the headlights which are brighter than DRL's.

DRLs are standard on Canadian trucks - optional on USA trucks at that time. Not sure about newer trucks.

DRL's were part of a package, with Anti-Lock brakes in the States. At least, that is what I have found in my literature, and in agreement with other Toyota products.

I was wanting to disable mine, but it requires a computer reprogramming, I believe. No biggee....just consider them to be a safety item....as Toyota does.

Disabling DRL's on the '00 Tundra is easy, just unplug the DRL Resistor in the Engine compartment.

Default DRL's

This is correct it is standard on trucks equipped with ABS brakes. The DRL's can be disconnected by unplugging the resistor that is under the hood between the battery and the fender. It is the larger plug not the smaller, just tape up the ends with some electrical tape and everything works fine, now you decide when the headlights are on!

Just a note on how Toyota DRLs work...Toyota switches the negative side of the headlights. The lights are always connected to the positive side. With DRLs, the negative side goes through a resistor that drops about 3 volts. When the headlights are switched on, the resistor is bypassed for full voltage through the headlights.

I'm not too sure it works that way on all years. I have a 2003 and antilock brakes but no DRL system. I bought this truck new so it has not been disabled by anynody. Mine has the 4 wheel antilock system which I thought had been made standard for 2003 and up models. I could be wrong about this...anybody else have any indeas?

In 2003 ABS was standard, DRL's were an option.

Okey Dokey, so talk me through this -- I'd LOVE to disable my DRL's. I just don't like them for whatever reason.

I have an 05 Tundra Dbl Cab. Where IS this DRL Resistor of which you speak?

Thanks,

JHog

Default Help...it's not working!

I have tried and tried to disconnect my DRL (I just hate them...and I want to upgrade my bulbs, but don't want to with DRL on). I disconnected the Daytime Running Light Resistor (pulled out the grey plug from the silver resistor looking thing in the location demonstrated on the .pdf file). The lights don't come on...that's good, but the engine starts and then dies. I didn't think there was any way those two things were connected. I started the engine 15 times...died every time. I looked at everything and could start the engine, but it kept dying.

So I plugged the Daytime Running Light Resistor back in...car starts and stays running. I pulled out the plug on the Daytime Running Light Resistor while the engine was running, engine died!

I thought for sure that_couldn't_be the resistor I unplugged...but I don't see anything else.

Has anyone had this problem? Can someone describe what the resistor looks like so I can reassure myself I'm not crazy?

HELP!!!

I know this sounds unlikely but can you just pull a fuse to disable the DTRL?

It's been awhile, but I remember my Tundra having a relay for the DRL's. Not sure if anything else was running off of that. I disconnected the resistor (near the battery) on my '02 and never had a problem.

No pulling the fuse or relay will impact other portions of the lighting circuit/system. Best to try pulling the DRL resistor.
