Default X51 Fatboy Bulbs and IPF Wiring Harness install

Thought I would put a post up about my install...

What i installed is not an HID conversion kit but rather an upgraded wire harness so when you run a higher wattage bulb you do not end up cooking your factory harness. The bulbs put out a higher wattage but are said to put out a lower angle as to not blind oncoming drivers. Read more about it here...

X51 Fatboy bulbs

The newest in high output bulb technology. This bulb uses a gas charge for extreme high output, while only drawing the legal limit of 55/60w. Out put on this bulb is a 190w low beam equivalent and 150w high beam equivalent. Why the backward numbers? IPF engineers have determined that when using the H4 lens a precise placement of light will not blind oncoming drivers. Low beam does typically represent a reduction in visibility though. This bulb balances the two by increasing brightness, but keeping the light low so as not to affect oncoming traffic. Try them, you will not be sorry. These are THE bulbs being used by top racers and industry officials today.

IPF Wiring Harness

If you're looking to run blubs 'hotter' then the factory 55/60w setup, you should plan on upgrading your wiring harness. Without the harness you take a chance on melt-down of your factory complete harness and endless headaches of troubleshooting all systems affected. Keep it safe and simple with this plug in harness from IPF. It draws power straight form the battery and bypasses all factory wiring to power your lights. The relays are triggered by your factory headlight switch for ease of use. Everything plugs right in as well. No splicing or jury-rigging to beef up your headlight system. This is the most simple and reliable kit on the market for any vehicle.

information borrowed from: http://www.rocky-road.com/ipfH4.html

and I just realized this last night, because I never use my high beams, with my wiring harness upgrade, apparently it overrides the function that turns off your fog lights when you turn on your high beams. I now have:

1) Low Beam
2) Low Beam with fog lights
3) High Beam
and something I now like to refer to as "Stupid Bright"...
4) High Beams with fog lights

All this with no cutting of wires for the foglight modification, just plug and play. What do your Silverstars do again? That's right, make a light with a blue-ish hue.

I have seen them [Silverstars] and compared them since I did the install and I am not impressed at all.

God, IPF's are so sweet!

Is this that IPF Super Lowbeam Bulb?
*edit* oh you got them through roack road....
SO... Do you really notice an improvement?
How hard was the install?

I'm interested...once my HKS Power Beams burnout (Which is taking way longer than my Silverstars did...) I was goingto throw my money away on a set of PIAA GTX bulbs but these IPF Bulbs sound like a better alternative.

the improvement was immediate. i used to drive with the fogs on all the time but now i only use just the headlights most of the time. i haven't been able to test in the desert at night but i am sure i will still be 100% satisified. the install was very simple. "plug and play" yes the lights are bright but i have not yet been "flashed" by oncoming drivers at night

Hi lunchbox858,

Thanks for posting your experience with the X51 Fatboy. I recently took a road trip and felt that the Tundra lighting is inadequate and dangerous for night driving. I am also trying to replace the low and high beam.

The site you recommend has 3 options for light bulb: IPF H4 Lenses, H4 Bulbs, Magic/Fatboy Bulbs. I wasn't sure which bulbs to select for the high and low beam. Any help in directing the correct bulb is much appreciated.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

choose the pulldown with the "Magic/Fatboy Bulbs" , choose Fatboy Bulbs (pair), the "Magic" bulbs IMO are lame. they make some afterglow after you turn off the headlights, something i would think the rice rocket guys would be into. ALSO get the upgraded wiring harness. the website says that the bulbs draw the same wattage but i wanted to be 100% safe as to not fry my electrical harness. also, i can now run their 100/170W bulbs when in the desert. i am not an expert in any way but it makes sence to me just to get teh harness. call rocky road if you want to confirm this.

Please post up once you get them and let me know what you think. I believe that i am the only one right now running this and i would like to hear more feed back from others.

I just ordered the X51 Fatboy Bulbs and Wiring harness today. My silverstars burned out this week after 1 year, if that, of use. So I put in my stock lights for now.

Thanks for the info and I will post more once they come and I put them in.

Any idea if the stock headlight housings can handle the extra heat generated by these monsters? I am really interested in them but want to know how they hold up on the long haul. This sounds like a better solution for Tundra owners than HID.

This is a really interesting thread. I agree about the Tundra lighting, way too dim. I am runnung the SilverStars right now and drive with the fog lamps with the headlamps all of the time.
So are any of the lamps listed on that you installed streest legal? I am VERY interested in this upgrade but the legality issue is the only thing holding me back (well, that and the $$ issue ).
And the other concern is the same as Keyser Soze. Don't want to melt the truck down .

Thanks!

Ken

as always i would suggest calling rocky-road outfitters for any technical questions. they would know best. i don't want to claim to be an expert in this field, i just want to pass on my experience with a product that i am using. so far there have been no problems and the housing is showing no signs of heat damage from the bulbs.

as far as 50 state legal, i don't know. i haven't found anything that says that they are or are not street legal

Lunch, is there anything you had to do different in wiring the harness than what is noted in the directions? If so, maybe you could modify your directions and post them or email them. I just ordered the harness and the guy wasn't totally helpful. He stated, "you'll have to figure out the install yourself, but it should work on a Toyota."

i'm sorry to hear that they wern't totally helpful...

i followed the directions as they are. no modification to them was needed. the instructions that came with the harness are from ARB and seem pretty straight forward. when i get a chance i will take some pics of mounting locations for the relays and how i ran the wiring.
