Hi I wanted to add a third smart key to my 2006 Prius. I got the FOb off ebay but it needs to be programed to recognize my car. The dealership charges $50 and it takes 10 seconds to do it! Anyone know how to do this reprograming?

I also lost a smart key and got one on ebay. Went to the dealer to program it and they could only make it start the car, no remote control, etc. They stated that the codes for the keys are different depending on where the car was purchased. My key came from California and was unused since the original car was totaled. I guess we have to be careful on what we get.

You have to have the TOYOTA scan tool to do that.
The immobilizer part of the key has to be programed
The smart key part has to be programed
The wireless door lock part has to be programed.
Each operation is seperate and has to be done with the Toyota Scan tool.

I also bought a Smart Key from a dealer on e-bay. I took it to my dealer to have it programed for my 06 Avalon and learned that it first had to be cleared on the oringinal car before they could program it for mine. Make sure yours is cleared before spending money at the dealer.

Who ever told you this, HAS NO IDEA WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT.

When you have a new key programmed to YOUR VEHICLE, the Toyota scan tool does all the communication to your vehicle. It doesnt care about any other vehicle. There are only a certain number of key codes that can be stored IN YOUR VEHICLE at any given time. I think it is 5 or 6 master keys. Make sure your smart key has a silver Toyota emblem on the back, otherwise its just a regular key.

Apparently your dealer doesnt have a clue.
Find another dealership.

I am a owner of used Toyota Prius 2007. Have two keys (with silver logo), they work with ECU but doest'n work with SmartKey and remote function. Batterys in the fob are good.

I was with this problem at local dealer, but they didn't fix it. They told me, that probably those keys were deleted from the Smart Key system (and remote) and they are not able to programm them without the third one which is programmed. The only way is to buy new Smart Key modul which costs about 1000$.

Is any other way to add those keys to the Smart Key function?

Please help me.

There is nothing you can do except maybe find another dealer.
They should be able to RESET the SMART KEY ECU, the Toyota scan tool provides this function.
This erases ALL smart key codes, so that they may be re -entered. If the key starts the vehicle that is all it should need. The RESET feature is for just this reason (Immobilizer reset and Smart Key Reset) in case someone looses all their keys (happens alot). You can just reseed the ecu and be on your way again.
If they try this and it does not work they only have 10 tries before the SMART KEY ECU Locks and then nothing will work, then you have to buy the Smart Key ECU for sure.

Thank you for your advice. We had some other problems with internal communication in that car. Now because of your advice everything is working normal, smart keys are working too. Thaks a lot.
