I bought my 2003 used Tundra (v6, 2wd) from a dealer a couple years ago and it was obviously a repo...no plates, maps in the glove box from southern California, while I'm in Northern California, etc. The previous owner had installed a Sony 10-disc changer system, which is great, except his wiring was a little screwy and once in a while my battery dies.
So, it died this morning. I pulled my wife's Jetta up, opened both hoods, and began hooking up the jumpers. (i'm sure its obvious where i'm going, but bear with me). The Jetta's battery has this cute velcro covering around it to keep it cozy or something. Anyway, in haste I partially removed it just enough to see the terminals, saw a big + sign above one terminal and hooked up the red cable to that terminal and began charging.
When I began to see smoke coming from my Tundra, I yanked all the cables, and checked the jetta's battery more closely. The + sign I saw was actually a large plastic Phillips head plug in the battery on the NEGATIVE terminal. Why the hell would you put a large (3/4" diam) PHILLIPS head plug on the negative terminal side?!?!?! Germans!
So, I let both vehicles rest a bit, hooked up the cables correctly for a couple minutes and started the Tundra. It starts, but that's all it does. The dash panel is dead, radio/air/windows/locks all dead. When I touch the gas, it does nothing until I floor it, then it roars. The lights, however, do work. Whoopee!
I'm having it towed to a mechanic tomorrow, but thought I'd see if anyone else is as big a moron as I am and has dealt with this before...
