Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Slip Yoke Assembly", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Can someone post a pic of a slip yoke assembly for a Tundra? I just had mine replaced (supposedly), under the TSB, but the part that I thought was being replaced, wasn't. I thought the slip yoke assembly was the part that connects the drive shaft to the transmission??
This is the second attempt to fix the leak. The first time I had it in they just replaced the seal, not the assembly. The second time they replaced the yoke assembly. It's all good now.
For everyone's edification. On the 2wd truck, the slip yoke is the front of the driveshaft that goes into the transmission. On the 4wd truck, the slip yoke is the "sleeve yoke" that is in the middle part of the driveshaft. Sleeve yoke is a Japanese mis-translation. The rear driveshaft is made by a Japanese company and is imported. The front driveshaft is made by Dana in the U.S. On the new Tundras and Tacomas, Dana makes both.
Oh yeah, forgot to mention. The slip yoke is called the slip yoke because that is where your lateral movement is - it slips. There is only one point on a driveshaft that allows this movement - side note, the centerbearing also has flex in it to allow movement.
Ok, truck has been to the dealer two times now, and I thought the problem was fixed. They have replaced the slip yoke seal and the slip yoke spline, but it is still leaking tranny fluid! Guess I'll be taking it back a third time to have the entire housing replaced. Has anyone else had this problem?
My '04 2WD Tundra had a tranny leak near the slip yoke assembly (i.e. where the drive shaft meets the transmission). The first time I had it in they replaced the seal, but that didn't fix the problem. Second time they replaced the slip yoke "spline", and I just found that it is still leaking! Guess I'll be taking it back a third time to have the entire assembly replaced. Has anyone else had this problem with their Tundra?
It seems like there should be a transmission seal to seal the shaft coming out of it. I can't see how the spline would enter into this. When I get time, I'll see if I can find the seal on an exploded view in my CD.
Apparently they replaced the seal initially, but that didn't solve the problem, then they replaced the spline. Maybe the old spline damaged the new seal, and they didn't replace the seal again on the second attempt. I should know tomorrow.
Yeah that could be it. When you said "spline" I didn't realize that the yoke deal had a splined recess on it to mate with the output shaft on the xmission. I did look at the manual and that has to be it; seal or yoke/spline.
