I changed the automatic transmission fluid in the v-8 Tundra last night. I checked the "How TO" section here at TS and it said for a simple drain it took 4.2 qts of fluid to refill. My Tundra manual said it took 2.1 qts.? I checked the level of my fluid before I drained it and then drained and measured the fluid that came out and I had drained out approx. 3.5 qts. It took about 3.5 qts. of new fluid to put the level back where it was. Does anyone know what caused the difference? I thought maybe the difference could be in dropping the transmisson pan and cleaning the filter out which would take a little more fluid.
In my Sequoia I also CAREFULLY measured the ATF the first time I drained it. For me, it took 4 quarts to replinish what I drained. It seems as if I've noticed most others also drained and refilled with 4 quarts. I find it very disappointing that the manual shows the drain and refill to take considerably less than what it actually is. Hopefully, others will post and tell us how much fluid drained out of their transmission the FIRST time they changed it. Also, for what it's worth, I simply drain and refill with Mobil 1. Many others have flushed the entitre system but I feel my simple drain and refill with Mobil 1 ATF will keep the transmission trouble free longer than I will keep the vehicle.
I cant say for sure (I didnt measure) but when I did mine I drained the pan first then did the complete flush. The pan drain apeared to be about 4 quarts though.

I also measured mine at 4 quarts. No need to flush with periodic drain and fills. Mobil 1 ATF works great for our early 00-01 models, but later models changed to the T-IV then the WS fluids.

Would it be ok to mix the current ATF with Mobil 1 when I do a simple drain and fill? I need to do a simple drain/fill soon but would it be ok to have only 4 quarts of ATF with the rest of the 10 quarts of reagular ATF. Thanks if anybody has the answer

I was in school last night, and was checking Mitchell On Demand for auto trannies and it basically said that 00-02( did not list 03 on) does NOT use Type IV fluid they use Dexron III and (Dexron II in parenthesis) Has anyone heard otherwise?

Consensus on here is yes, it's OK to mix the Mobil1 ATF with the regular ATF. Many people have done it.

Thank you! Now that's one less thing I have to worry about

Yes I agree. It is safe to mix the Mobil 1 with what is already in there and that is exactly what I have done. I do a drain-and-fill every 15-20k miles.
