Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "4.0 V-6 coming to Tundra?", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Originally posted by LMC Will Toyota put the 4.0 V-6 in the Tundra in '04? I intend to get a Tundra within the next six months and have reservations about that thirsty V-8.
Toyota keeps a tight lip on what they plan to do and the 4.0 v6 doesn't get much better mileage in the 4-runner over the v8 in the same truck. .

If you're not going to tow all that much the V6 is fine. Iwas contemplating the same choice, but decided the v6 was the best choice for my pocket book and will never complain. I get about 15 in the city and 18 on the hightway (living in California)
The advantage may be the extra power [towing, hauling] of the 4.0 combined with a manual tranny. My 1995 T-100 was excellent towing with manual and 3.4 engine.
I get a steady 16mpg around SoCal streets/highways - 18-20 on long trips. I've used Mobile 1 since the first oil change and I'm about 30K now - don't know if it has really made a difference, but I'm into it for the long haul now.
The Super Charger is supposed to help mileage, but don't know for sure if that's true or not.
I'm a real "lead foot", so if I'm getting decent mileage with the V6 then most anybody will!

I have seen a ton of posts on this topic and have never heard of anyone getting better gas mileage with the supercharger. Very simply, more horsepower requires more fuel/air....therefore worse gas mileage.
I have had the v8 supercharger in my truck for a little over a month now and I am definitely getting better gas mileage than I did without the supercharger. It all depends on how you drive.
I just got a '03 Tundra 4x4 V6 5 speed manual and find it to be powerful enough...
so far my mileage is far better than I expected...averaging around 20MPG overall. I have noticed that how heavy my foot is that tank does make a big difference.
I really want a S/C - and from everything I've heard and read, overall mileage will be a bit better since you're not requiring a pedal mashing at every signal!
