Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Engine surges 3 times at start up???", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
My '03 Tundra V-8 starts perfectly fine. What sort of irritates me is how it will idle fast, slow down, idle fast, slow down, idle fast and slow down to normal. It only will do each change in idle speed for about 3 seconds. Is this normal?
Any other symptoms while driving ? From what you have stated it sounds like your throttle control motor is hunting, possible cause is a vacuum leak, incorrect fuel mixture on startup, or ignition misfire on startup, even the TPS could either be going bad or out of adjustment. Your throttle motor is fighting to control the idle for a couple of seconds causing the surge. Is your AC on during startup ? If so try it off, the AC fast idle may be interferring.
I usually turn the AC off before parking anyway, so I can't really remember ever noticing it. Running the fan for a minute helps clear the moisture on the fins.
Man, when I hear vacuum leak, I start to sweat. A great Fear comes over me! How many vacuum lines should I expect to inspect? 5, 10, 20??? Do they all connect to the engine?
There are surprising few lines on the engine, won't be hard to spot a loose one. All vacuum is generated from the engine so your main concern is the integrity of all lines connecting to the engine. Also make sure your air intake tube clamps are secure as well. On my '01 throttle body there is a vacuum port located under the throttle motor cover. It is not used on my engine just capped. Also check this one as it is hidden.
