just wondering
how do you folks like the V6 Tundra?
1. power and drivetrain
2. any advantages/disadvantages over V8
3. towing/hauling experiences
etcetera
cheers,
ace57 from MA
I used to have a '01 V8 (wrecked it. see my photos). Now have a '02 V6. I don't know why but the first thing I noticed about the '02 was that it rode a little better, a little tighter. I haven't towed with either of them, so I can't give you a fair comparison. The V8 feels like it has a lot more power but I don't really miss it. The V6 does everything I need it to do. I had a '90 4Runner and the V6 was smaller in it and I towed a bass boat many times and a pretty big cargo trailer a couple of times 500 miles each way and had no problems. If you plan on towing over the 5000 pounds that the V6 is rated for, or if you just want to be able to get up to the cut out speed faster, get the V8. Otherwise I would say get the V6 and save a little gas and money up front.
I love mine. Does everything I need very comfortably. If I had it to do over I would still get a V6, but may get a 4x4 rather than 4x2. Haven't done any real snow driving to date so I'm not sure if I will regret not having 4x4. My V6 holds its own on the open road.

Ditto. I will soon find out in the morning though. HEY!!!! I finally see a fellow VA tundra owner here.
Love mine - no need for a V8 unless I wanted to tow something or just wear out my tires faster!
I got it up to a little over 100mph on the way back from San Francisco this last week before the speed limiter kicked in (but I still kicked the Nissan's butt!)
I am thinking about adding the Super Charger, Headers and Exhaust someday, but not a real high priority right now (plus the lack of $$ and all!) - still very happy with mine and it's done me well - both on/off road.
I love my Tundra SR5 Access Cab! I have tricked it a little bit since purchased. See my options below.
Regarding power, is good enough for me, it handles better now with progressive coil springs/TRD struts/shocks, in addition, just got my TSB brakes done. I have to thank my dealer for a great job on TSB Brakes.
The advantages is probable gas, price of the truck and parts are less expensive than a Tundra V8. Disadvantages over V8, is for sure power, towing only that I can think this early in the morning.
If you plan to tow at all, get the V8. I have a 4,000 lb boat, and though 950 lbs below Toyota's limit, the truck really strains to pull it. Luckily the boat stays in a rented slip during the season, so once a year in and once a year out is all the towing I do.
If you are not towing, you will be very pleased with the V6 (or at least I have been)
thanks for the response about the towing, that is the info i am trying to get.
actually i have a small bass boat, probably under 2000 #'s total trailered.....................i towed it for the first time home yesterday, and had no trouble, could barely feel it........
of course with a 4000 lb. boat..............i can see why !
i also hauled a pile of wood home for a short distance yesterday as well, no prob.
again, i understand these are small weights compared to the example you gave, i am just wondering how others have faired with say 2500 lbs or less............
cold up there in maine heh ??
i'm freezing my $#% off here in Mass.
I've owned both. I had a 2001 V-8. Loved the power, but needed better mileage. I averaged 17.4 mpg for 18,000 miles with the V-8 which is pretty good. My V6 five speed has averaged 20.1 over the first 13,000 miles. That amounts to about 60-70 miles more per tank. If I had to replace the Tundra, I would get the V6 again, but would try to find a 4X4 5 speed. I have a heck of a time getting up my driveway when it snows. I can't even make it out with chains.
Ace57-
Yes, we are freezing our collective a$$e$ off up here in Maine! Since you drive a V6 and live in a cold climate, I'm curious - does your gas mileage go to absolute crap in the extreme cold? Has happened every year I've owned the truck regardless of using 4 wheel drive. Wondering if you'd experienced the same?
Yeah--its been cold here too. Got down to 29 for a coulpe of hours the other night . I have also noticed a slight drop in MPG for a couple of tank fulls. Dont think its the weather. Could we be getting some bad gas. I filled up at several different stations so I cant pin it down to a single brand of gas. O well. This tank seem to be back close to normal. Think I slip in my last bottle of Pimrose maybe that will help. ---Buzz
My mileage has been pretty consistant all year round, but it does drop slightly in winter. I generally run about 17 give or take. I thought about it for a while, and then realized that the drop in mileage was probably due to my letting the truck idle to warm up, which doesn't happen in summer. that's wasted gas and probably dragged down the figures a little. I tried the v8 before settling for the V6. I don't haul much or tow at all, and felt the extra MPG were more important. Still has plenty of power. As far as milege goes, I still have fond memories of the '68 Olds Delmont 88 I learned to drive in...got about 9 MPG with it's 455 V8 (On the other hand, It had what you might call VERY good acceleration). Now that was an engine (about 7.5 liters for those into metric).

I had one of the kind of cars one time---got 20 mpg.----8 in town and 12 on the road --Buzz
I've heard the gas companies reformulate for the cold weather and that causes the milage drop.
In answer to the towing question, I often tow a 6x10 U-Haul loaded with cabinets and tools and have NO complaints. Granted it's not a 4000 lb boat....
I bought the six because it's a stick and I ALWAYS drive a stick (more control) and because of the milage. We, as a species, are chewing up this planet pretty fast and all efforts to help are good. The V-8 guys say it's only a couple of mpg but over the life of the truck it's 20-40,000 miles!
And I love my truck!
