This is a discussion thread titled "Regarding the factory Limited Slip Differential", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Hey gang,
My 2002 SR5 V8 Tundra (4x2) came with the factory option LSD. Is this the same unit as the TRD LSD (Eaton) that others are dropping in? Is this as heavy duty as the TRD?
Thanks,
Jeff

The factory option Hino unit is probably heavier duty than the TRD unit made by Eaton. There is no way to know for sure, but if I had a choice, I would choose the Hino unit.
Re: Regarding the factory Limited Slip Differential
the trd lsd made by eaton has three spider gears, while the factory has two. it also has a carbon fiber clutch disc while the other does not. if you guys want a site that has a little tiny bit of information on the trd lsd and a picture here you are. it looks awesome and i cant wait to throw it on my truck (when i get the dinero).
Re: Regarding the factory Limited Slip Differential
I was thinking about adding this to my truck. I contacted the parts dept at a couple Toyota dealerships out here and I was told that I couldnt order the factory part from Toyota. Its not available for order only installed at the factory. And that the TRD part would be my best option. I wish i would have ordered the truck with it from the factory. Has any one done the TRD LSD yet and how is it if so.?
Re: Regarding the factory Limited Slip Differential
i bought my truck at maita toyota in sacramento, which has been really good to me actually, but i called them about getting the factory part and they said that if you got a new one it would cost around 1900 bucks or so for the third member- i couldnt believe it but thats what they said if i remember correctly. they gave me the number of someone in la to call but i havent done it yet. when i replace my diff im just going to go with the trd. suprteck- where in northern california do you live if you dont mind posting it. i grew up in redding but went to school at davis and now san diego. just wondering...
Re: Regarding the factory Limited Slip Differential
I got the TRD limited slip right when it came out.... It has been 15,000 miles and still no problem. When compared to the open differential, it is night and day. Vastly improved steet traction as well as vastly improved off-road performance. All i can say is get one Suprteck. When you get one- you will kick yourself for not getting one sooner.
Re: Regarding the factory Limited Slip Differential
Player, what's a "Suprteck"? I talked to a parts guy at a Toyota dealership today. He does a lot of Offroading. He says the Limited Slip causes washout of the back end in rain or snow but still recommends it. He said the best, is something called Electronic or Air Locker, but they don't make them for full size trucks. Anyone know anything about this?
Re: Regarding the factory Limited Slip Differential
Yea it sounds awesome. Im seriously thinking about it. I need to look into something first. When I bought my truck i also got the "NEW" Toyota Motor Corp Platinum 7 yr /100,000 mile "almost full coverage, complete " extended warranty. I read all the fine print on this new one they are offering and its a great warranty. I want to see how this mod will effect it. Hmmm
Re: Regarding the factory Limited Slip Differential
Suprteck is a TS memeber As far as the LSD causing "washout" in the rain and snow....yes and no.... I can get better traction in the rain and snow with th elimited slip vs. the open differential. That is, if I take it easy on the gas and don't gun it. If you use too much gas, the rear end will swing out. IF you use too much gas with the stock open differential, you will go nowhere, but your rear end won't slide out. So to cut it short-- In my opinion, you can get a tad better traction in the rain and snow if you know how to use the limited slip and know its characteristics....
Re: Regarding the factory Limited Slip Differential
Thanks for the info. My truck with the factory LSD seems to have great traction. e actually only had snow several times this year (thank god!), but it's been pretty good for a 2 wheel drive vehicle. I've got dreams of supercharging this baby when (and if) it really becomes available. I've heard rumors that the Tundra rear end wasn't capable of handling that kind of HP. Hopefully the factory LSD is strong enough to handle it. Any thoughts?
Thanks, Jeff
Re: Regarding the factory Limited Slip Differential
JDunbar : We had the discussion over "weakest link" on supercharging at the last meet. According to Paul from Don McGill Toyota, 340E/F is the weakest link/concern. I don't recall the exact conversation but you can check with other Texas members.
Re: Regarding the factory Limited Slip Differential
lelandstanford,
I'm not up on what the 340e/f is. Are you reffering to the rear end? If so is that the stock rear end or the LSD? Or is that the tranny? or what.
Thanks,
Jeff
