Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Who carries Mobil-1 Syn ATF??", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Originally posted by SATundra Yea its pricey stuff. I think when I bought mine it was $4.50 qt. I think it was about $75 out the door for 16 qts. I did the complete flush.
If you pull the drain plug, it drains about 4 quarts. How did you drain the other 12?

I first drained the 4 qts from the tranny pan, then put 4 back in, then used the instructions in the Garage Forum, "Complete ATF Change" for the other 12 qts. Complete flush.

Admittedly, I don't understand all the ins and outs of auto transmissions but let me pose a question.
It seems to me that the 4 quarts that you drain and add initially would pretty quickly become mixed in with the other remaining 12 quarts of old fluid and that you would end up draining some of the 4 new while draining the remaining 12 old. Does this make sense? Am I missing something? Maybe I have been thinking about this too long.....
I saw an episode of "Two Guys Garage" once where, if I recall correctly, they did and ATF flush. Seems that I remember that they had this fancy machine that had one tank that connected to the outbound line to the ATF cooler and then another tank (with new ATF) that connected the the inbound line (from the ATF cooler to the trans.). As old fluid was removed, new was pumped in at the same rate. Does anyone know how well this compares to the method posted in Lon's Garage?
The machine works well - old fluid is pumped into a reservior and new is pumped into the truck. However, is much more expensize then the DIY method.

Most places say they'll flush with the machine for ~$80(not including syn ATF cost(15-16 quarts)). But the do it yourself method, using the procedure in the garage, is very easy. Personally, I think it's easier than changing the engine oil. Just takes two people and a couple extra minutes. Besides, then you know it's been done correctly.

I've changed ATF both ways, with a machine and with the hose & bucket, and both do a good job. One Nissan pickup didn't shift as it should. I added a flush product then did the hose & bucket drain. The ATF started coming out black, then after several quarts is was (and still is) bright red...it shifts OK, too.
I've been reading for a while now, and this is my first post. We have an '03 Sequoia with 30K miles. Shifting feels a little sluggish and rough, and will only shift smoothly if you let of the gas pedal when its time to shift.
I was thinking about taking her into the dealer for the A/T flush, but felt better about doing it myself. Correct me if I'm wrong, but is there an A/T fluid filter for this car that requires changing?
If it is just changing the fluid, where do I get the instructions that everyone is talking about? I think it would make me feel a lot better about doing it.

Thanks!
Same here, I'd like to know where is that ATF complete flush DIY. Where is that Garage section? Do you have to pay for that?
