Default How to check the trans fluid??

I did the trans fluid change to synthetic. Geez, I don't mean to sound stupid but It is not clear to me how to check the fluid level.

I looked at the manual and cannot find anything on it.

Should the truck be running, not running? Should the trans be in park, neutral?? Does it make any difference? I checked it after letting it sit overnight (cold, engine not running) and it was in the "hot" range on the dipstick. Is it overfilled or will the level change with the engine running?

Thanks for input on the "correct" way to check the fluid.

Thanks,
-Gator
